USS Equinox, as opposed to any other ship of its class, suffered extensive damage inflicted over a lengthy period. Some damage was sustained when the ship was catapulted to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker's powerful displacement wave. More damage was inflicted upon the ship by repeated assaults by the Krowtonan Guard, in which also half the crew were killed. The ship's supply of dilithium ran out and USS Equinox had to operate only on thrusters until they landed on the class-M planet inhabited by the friendly Ankari who gave them supplies and then involved their "spirits of good fortune" to bless the starship's journey. Scans revealed that the "spirits" were nucleogenic lifeforms from another dimension who emitted high levels of anti-matter. The Equinox crew obtained one of the devices to summon the "spirits". On accidentally discovering that the dead body of one of the lifeforms emitted a rich source of power, the Equinox crew adapted the ship's engines to make use of the new power source, and the crew, under the command of their captain, Rudolph "Rudie" Ransom III, began regularly trapping the lifeforms in order to continuously fuel the ship's engines. Certain controls in engineering and also on the bridge were modified to access, process and utilise the new power-source. |

| Unsurprisingly the nucleogenic beings attacked the ship that was killing members of their race. Equinox's crew tried to develop shields to protect against attack but were unsuccessful until they teamed up with Voyager's crew. After Voyager learned Equinox's dark secret, i.e. that they were killing lifeforms to provide a source of fuel, Equinox's crew managed to escape, steal the new shield emitter and abandoned Voyager to the alien attacks. The screenshot shows USS Equinox utilising the new shields. | ![]() |

The future Nova variant is seen in the final story [#171 and #172 Endgame] - see Article: Nova-class variants. Modifications include the fact that the deflector gap in the saucer is largely filled, there is a new bridge or bridge dome and the fins on the nacelles have been removed.
