SHIP AND CREW

The Federation Timeship U.S.S. Relativity NCV-474439-G is a state-of-the-art 29th century vessel employed to transport Starfleet personnel through space and time in order to maintain and repair the timeline, as overseen by the Temporal Integrity Commission mentioned by Captain Braxton to the Voyager crew in [#50 and #51 Future's End]. Many of the timeship's systems incorporate approximately 500 years of development. The sophisticated technology aboard the timeship includes temporal transporters. There are also enhanced sensors. Braxton tells the Voyager crew: "In my century we can scan time much as you use sensors to scan space."

Braxton, revealed as the saboteur

The crew of the USS Relativity oversee the successful mission to restore the timeline which has suffered a major incursion due to the action of a mysterious saboteur who planted a temporal disruptor on board USS Voyager which results in that starship being destroyed in 2375 and thus damaging the timeline. The temporal disruptor fractures space-time within a radius of 150 metres and causes the starship's hull to demolecularise.

In order to locate where the bomb has been planted and identify the saboteur, the Relativity, commanded by Captain Braxton with Lieutenant Ducane as second-in-command, extract Seven of Nine from USS Voyager a microsecond before the destructive explosion. Seven is ideal for the intended job of searching Voyager because of her Borg ocular implant which has the ability to detect irregularities in space-time. After being extracted from time, Braxton persuades Seven to help them. She is brought up-to-date on the Starfleet protocols deemed necessary, which include knowledge of common temporal paradoxes, and is briefed by Braxton. Seven's ocular implant is then occluded so that it cannot be seen, and she is transported aboard Voyager.

She is recruited three times for the job, because she is unable to complete her mission fully the first two times and dies, the second time due to interference during transport which damages her bionetic implants. During the second recruitment, while in the 2371 time frame, Seven learns where the bomb has been planted - Deck 4 section 39 - but the weapon is out of phase i.e. she is in the wrong time frame to be able to neutralise it although her discovery enables the Relativity's crew to narrow the 'window' to within two years before she joined the crew (in early 2374) and when the ship was under attack. Before she is extracted from Voyager for her third recruitment, the crew discover from Seven that the ship is experiencing temporal distortions but are unable to overcome them.

During Seven's third recruitment, she transports to Voyager during 2372 when the starship is under attack by the Kazon. With the help of the 2372-Janeway, she almost apprehends the saboteur, catching him as he is about to plant the weapon - the saboteur is Captain Braxton, or rather, an older version of Braxton, who is suffering from temporal psychosis and names Janeway as the cause of his problems, for Janeway's several alterations of the timeline had to be (or will be) dealt with by Braxton, one of them costing him 30 years' exile on Earth in the 20th century (the events are depicted in [#50 and #51 Future's End]. Ducane arrests his captain "for crimes you're going to commit" and assumes command of the Relativity.

The older Braxton version, however, flees through time and other parts of Voyager, but is apprehended by Seven with aid from her younger self. That Braxton is transported to the Relativity and arrested.

In return for promised leniency, that Braxton reveals when exactly he boarded Voyager to plant the temporal disruptor. Ducane recruits the 2375-Janeway to travel back to the relevant moment in 2372. She does so and captures Braxton as he transports aboard Voyager, disruptor in hand.

Ducane is pleased that the timeline has been restored with only a fractional incursion rate of 0.0036, and returns Seven and Janeway to Voyager. He assures Janeway that the three versions of Braxton will be re-integrated in time for his trial, and that there will end up being just one Seven of Nine.

The entire mission is handled by the USS Relativity, including on-the-spot strategic planning, Seven's briefings, temporal transports, audio communications, provision of equipment (the instrument issued to Seven to neutralise the disruptor, hand-phaser and tricorder, combadge), and the confinement of the Braxtons. The Bridge plays the most significant role during the mission, with the Briefing Room and, for confining Braxton, the Brig. This article concentrates on the Bridge, with a short description of the Briefing Room.
