These uniforms are introduced in 2373, and are first seen in [ST VIII: First Contact]. They are worn by all Starfleet personnel except for the USS Voyager crew who, until their return to the Alpha Quadrant at the end of 2377, instead continue to use the uniform variants introduced in 2369. In 2375, in [#98 In The Flesh], members of Species 8472 masquerading as Starfleet personnel for some reason wear the pre-2373 uniforms, including a "Ferengi" who inexplicably is not in cadet uniform. For discussion see PERSONAL LOG: entry for [#98 In The Flesh]: Starfleet uniforms - nit-pick/possible blooper - access here. See also Why USS Voyager's crew wear the same uniform throughout the series (2371-2377) even though Starfleet re-styles the uniforms in 2373. The 2373 uniforms are seen in [DS9] Seasons 5-7, [ST IX: Insurrection] and [ST X: Nemesis]. This means, perhaps confusingly, that Starfleet personnel such as Counsellor Troi, Admiral Paris and others at Project Pathfinder are seen in [Voyager] wearing the 2373 uniforms. The altered Barclay hologram also wears the 2373 uniform in [#152 Inside Man]. In [ST X: Nemesis], set in 2378, Admiral Kathryn Janeway wears the 2373 uniform. See also Why 2394 is the last service date for the uniforms introduced in 2373. |

Below: Cmdr. Will Riker in [ST VIII: First Contact]: The colour of the shirt worn beneath the jacket depends on the division the wearer is assigned to. For instance, gold (or yellow) indicates security or engineering. In the screenshot shown above left, Worf wears the red command shirt because although he serves on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E as security/tactical officer in this instance he has recently been rescued from the USS Defiant of which he was captain. The department colour is also indicated by a thin band that encircles the sleeve cuffs. The broad grey stripe across the shoulders is common to all ranks in the new uniforms system. Worf retains the Klingon baldric, indicating that the Starfleet policy continues, namely that of allowing its personnel to customise their uniform to reflect individual cultural heritage. In the field or at assignment level, that policy is subject to the ultimate sanction of the commanding officer: for instance, in [#16 Learning Curve] Tuvok orders Crewman Chell to remove the Kazleti pendant he is wearing.
Both the shirt and the jacket look made of thicker material than those in the previous uniforms system. The jacket looks like the equivalent of today's fairly heavy wool-mix, and non-stretch material, the sort that feels very heavy if it gets wet (it is also hard work to sew, at least by hand).
