YELLOW ALERT   cancel Yellow Alert

This relates to the period 2266 to 2373. 2266 equates to [TNG] Season 3; well into that year the [TNG] Seasons 1 and 2 uniforms were slightly amended. The amended uniforms endure for the rest of [TNG] i.e. up to and including 2370, a year before the [Voyager] series begins. This means that the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D crew carry on wearing the uniform even though a version new to tv viewers is seen in the next Star Trek series [DS9] and whose first two Seasons are aired at the same time as the last two Seasons of [TNG]; that new version is presented as simply a variant of the existing uniforms system.

For the new [Voyager] series, no changes to the uniform were made and so the USS Voyager crew wear the same uniform variants as seen in the first two Seasons of [DS9]. However, a re-styled Starfleet emblem/combadge is introduced for [ST VII: Generations] and for the [Voyager] series and it is thus adopted by Starfleet from 2371.

The new emblem/combadge appears in [ST VII: Generations], [DS9], [ST VIII: First Contact], [Voyager] of course, [ST IX: Insurrection] and [ST X: Nemesis].

ADMIRAL'S UNIFORM AND VARIANTS

This paragraph also appears on Page 1. The admiral's uniforms of the 2360's are a more formal version of the duty uniform and closely resemble dress uniform. They also feature elaborate braiding and other embellishments that set them apart from captains and junior officers. However, the exact design changes slightly from admiral to admiral, and the difference appears to be more a personal choice than indicative of any specific function. There is no difference between the uniform style adopted by male and female admirals. The most consistent aspect of the 2360's and early 2370's admiral's uniform is that they all feature the colour red, which denotes the duty division command. There are exceptions to even this rule, however, as one Vice-Admiral Toddman in 2371 [DS9: The Die Is Cast] retained the gold shirt of the engineers division, illustrating that one can retain a loyalty to a department even after the promotion to the admiralty.

source Encyclopaedia The rank of admiral is the highest in Starfleet and therefore the admiral's uniform is, as expected, immediately impressive. Its striking effect is partly achieved by the use of gold braid. In addition, flag officers wear rank pins rather than the rank pips worn by the ranks below them. Within the rank of admiral there are grades, the lowest being admiral one star, and the highest being fleet admiral five star. Unlike the ranks below them who wear their rank pins on one side of the collar only (the right side), admirals wear two rank pins, one each side of the collar.

The previous incarnation of the admiral's uniform featured a diagonal sash across the tunic, but this version's tunic has a deep V-shape at the neck, and gold stripes on the sleeve cuffs. The uniform is worn with a black undershirt that has a gold-lined, stand-up collar.

ST:M incorrectly labels the uniform drawing as being in use between 2266 and 2273, a whole century too early. That is a misprint and it should read 2366-2373.

This style of admiral's uniform shares much in common with the duty uniforms of this period in that is has black shoulders and a stand-up collar on which the rank pips are displayed. The tunic is fastened in the centre and it is worn with black trousers. Gold braiding runs down the front centre of the jacket, and braid also edges a broad stripe on the sleeve cuffs.

Like all the admiral's uniforms of this period, this version has a predominantly red tunic, but unlike the rest it does not have a stand-up collar. It fastens on the right-hand side like the dress uniform does, and the rank pin is located on the black shoulder on the right-hand side, just below the neckline. As with the other admiral's uniforms this version has stripes on the sleeve cuffs. There is also gold braiding around the collar and edging the vent of the front of the trouser bottoms where they fall over the black boots.

In 2373, in [#57 Coda], an alien presence invades Janeway's cerebral cortex as she lies severely injured as the result of a shuttlecraft crash. The alien presence assumes the form of her father, Admiral Janeway, in an unsuccessful effort to win her trust and lure her to her death.
