YELLOW ALERT   cancel Yellow Alert

This relates to the period 2266 to 2373. 2266 equates to [TNG] Season 3; well into that year the [TNG] Seasons 1 and 2 uniforms were slightly amended. The amended uniforms endure for the rest of [TNG] i.e. up to and including 2370, a year before the [Voyager] series begins. This means that the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D crew carry on wearing the uniform even though a version new to tv viewers is seen in the next Star Trek series [DS9] and whose first two Seasons are aired at the same time as the last two Seasons of [TNG]; that new version is presented as simply a variant of the existing uniforms system.

For the new [Voyager] series, no changes to the uniform were made and so the USS Voyager crew wear the same uniform variants as seen in the first two Seasons of [DS9]. However, a re-styled Starfleet emblem/combadge is introduced for [ST VII: Generations] and for the [Voyager] series and it is thus adopted by Starfleet from 2371.

The new emblem/combadge appears in [ST VII: Generations], [DS9], [ST VIII: First Contact], [Voyager] of course, [ST IX: Insurrection] and [ST X: Nemesis].

INTRODUCTION

This uniform, which I call 'field uniform' as this particular version is not mentioned in sources as far as I know, is seen in [#16 Learning Curve] and [#58 Blood Fever]. A slightly different version is seen in [#167 Friendship One]. Although standard duty uniform is worn on away missions, special garments such as the environmental suit (described here) and the field uniform are worn whenever particular conditions are expected. The generic field uniform is therefore utilised by USS Voyager crew between 2371 and 2377, and the styles are either the one that were in ship's quartermaster stores when the starship left Deep Space 9 to start the mission into the Badlands or else ones adapted as need requires during the stay in the Delta Quadrant and/or adapted in response to ideas generated on re-establishing contact with Starfleet. Elsewhere in Starfleet (Star Trek) no version exactly like this one is seen - compare, say, the combat uniforms seen in [DS9: The Siege of AR-558] described here.

DESCRIPTION AND SCREENSHOTS

[#58 Blood Fever]
The uniform is a grey-coloured single-piece garment manufactured from thick resilient material. In [Blood Fever] the away team expect to descend and ascend rock formations beneath the planet's surface, and so tough material in the field uniform is essential to minimise problems such as the material snagging. The uniform is also, as far as possible, form-fitted for humanoid personnel, so that, while comfortable and thus able to be worn for long periods of time, it does not inhibit broad freedom of movement.

the material is hardwearing; during the course of a mission Neelix falls a distance and Paris is hurled to the ground [#58 Blood Fever]

The uniform is front-fastening and can be fastened right up to the neck, as protecting the body from harsh environments is an important aspect of the field uniform, which is why the sleeves are full-length rather than short. The front central fastener does not need to be done right up to the neck, thus allowing the wearer a certain flexibility in, say, warm or humid conditions.

The grey colour of the uniform gives the wearer the ability to blend in with certain terrain in that light-grey is not an easy colour to spot especially in dim light. But the uniform also features a narrow stripe of colour or piping that runs horizontally across the upper chest and around the arms in a downward V-shape and around the back of the uniform.

The colour of the piping denotes the division of the wearer, and both the colour and the downward V-shape piping are in accord with the style of the Starfleet standard duty uniform that the Voyager crew normally wears. The division colours, as usual, are red for command and conn, yellow for security and engineering, and blue for science and medical.

In addition, there are thin dark stripes of material running down the inside of the arm, and these are possibly intended to act as reinforcement material, rather than acting as decoration. There is also a light-colour section of material on each side of the body. It could be a design feature but it could possibly be a kind of gusset to provide both extra strength to the material and to provide extra 'give' should unusual or strenuous physical exertion require it.

Rank pips are worn on the front right-hand side of the collar, and the Starfleet emblem/combadge is worn in the customary position on the left breast.

Note the rank pins (Tuvok's Starfleet rank pin and Chakotay's Maquis rank pin) and combadges in these two screenshots.

A backpack containing equipment and a strong wide belt for holding various tools or instruments such as the tricorder are usual accessories to the uniform.
[#58 Blood Fever]
Pouches containing additional equipment can also be attached to the belt. Black, heavy, rugged and durable boots replace the standard duty boots. In the right-hand screenshot Chakotay is wearing a Sims beacon (or SIMS beacon) on his left wrist i.e. a wrist-mounted torch with twin-lights (it is named after Alan Sims, the show's property master).

The standard grey undershirt is worn beneath the field uniform.
