This page relates to uniform changes introduced in [Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan] whose events occur in 2285. This uniform system is maintained until the 2340's. In [#44 Flashback] Tuvok is "seen" by Janeway and himself as he takes her on a mental visit of certain events of 2293 portrayed in [Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country]. |

STANDARD UNIFORM This is a red double-breasted jacket, worn with black trousers and boots. The strap used to fasten the jacket indicates rank and division. The buckle bears the Starfleet emblem. The colour on the inside flap of the jacket is tan-coloured or white. The collar and sleeves of the under-jersey are ribbed and a highly visible white. Black boots are worn with the standard uniform, returning to the separate boots of the 2260's which had been replaced by integral boots in the 2270's uniform system. This uniform is worn by all officers including admirals. |

OPTIONAL VEST Officers can opt to wear a red vest over a plain-coloured shirt in place of the jacket. The vest has a number of small pockets, and is often worn with the field jacket during landing party missions. In this combination the uniform shows no indication of the wearer's rank.
|
TURTLENECK SHIRT A turtleneck-style shirt is a feature of all variations of the officer's uniform. The colour indicates the wearer's division: white for command, grey/blue for operations, green for medical, red for engineering. The shirt is worn on its own only in informal situations.

FEMALE VARIANT Female officers can opt for a version of the standard duty uniform that features a skirt worn with knee-high boots instead of trousers. The top half of the uniform is identical to the standard version. In practice, most female officers prefer to wear trousers. Lt. Uhura (pictured) is one of the few female personnel who chooses to wear the skirt and boots version.
|
ENGINEER'S VEST Ship's engineers can opt to wear a black vest that is more practical for hands-on work. The vest is often worn with a large equipment belt that has fastenings for holding a variety of tools. On more formal occasions, engineers still wear the standard duty uniform.

CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER In sickbay the Chief Medical Officers often wears a white uniform with an open collar. The jacket is worn over the standard green turtleneck shirt, the green indicating the assigned division. On other occasions the CMO wears a standard duty uniform.
|
MEDICAL STAFF Other medical personnel, such as nurses and orderlies, wear a collarless white uniform. The tunic is worn with a green undershirt, green again indicating the medical division. The caduceus symbol is formed into a badge which is worn on the left breast. Throughout Starfleet, the caduceus symbol indicates that the wearer is a medic. Rank insignia is displayed on the sleeve cuffs and shoulders.

SECURITY OFFICER Security personnel who are based on space stations wear a blue-grey uniform that consists of a rugged sweater and trousers, with a white belt. Unusually, this uniform also features a cap. Starship-based security personnel normally wear the standard duty uniform. The shoulder styling, where the division is indicated, together with the upper armband, are also unusual compared with the standard duty uniform. |

VARIANT UNIFORM FOR CADETS, TRAINEES AND ENLISTED PERSONNEL This all-in-one jumpsuit, with its broad colour panel at the top conspicuously distinguishes the wearer as a cadet, trainee or enlisted personnel. The ribbed collar and cuffs are coloured black for enlisted crewmen and red for trainees. Coloured stripes above the left cuff indicated which duty division the wearer belongs to. A white stripe on the left forearm indicates command duty. The jumpsuit also has pockets. There is no belt, as that would constrict movement, but a part belt-like panel is worn at the front at the waist in order to display the Starfleet emblem and thus clearly indicate that the wearer is a member of Starfleet. |

VARIANT JACKET Senior officers with the rank of captain and above can choose to wear a 'bomber jacket' style variant of the uniform, which is a less formal style than the normal duty uniform. It is worn with a white undershirt with ribbed collar as white indicates the command division. Rank is indicated on the sleeve cuffs and on a shoulder flash worn on the right shoulder, even though in this version the shoulder strap serves no practical purpose. The Starfleet emblem is worn at the bottom of the jacket (the area of the wearer's waist). The officer's pin is worn on the left breast. |

ALTERNATE VEST By the 2290's, Starfleet has introduced an alternative version of the vest, which features a red front and black sides and back. The vest has a square-style neckline and is fastened at the front. The officer's pin continues to be worn on the left breast. The vest shows more of the thick ribbed white undershirt. This vest version is less practical than its predecessor since it has no pockets. Kirk can be seen wearing one in the Nexus reality he falls into in 2293. (The screenshots show rear and front views.) |

FIELD DUTY UNIFORM For some combat missions, Starfleet personnel wear a rugged sweater, matching trousers, and combat boots. This version of the uniform is still worn with the standard undershirt. The sweater is tucked into the top of the trousers. Rank is indicated on the sleeve cuff. Kirk (pictured) wears a dark green version of the field uniform.

FIELD DUTY UNIFORM The field uniform worn on combat missions also exists in a sand colour in order to provide a degree of camouflage in desert environments. Both versions of the uniform can be worn with a packs including a large back pack for carrying equipment. This uniform is worn in 2287 by a mission team to Nimbus III, a barely habitable Class-M planet in the Neutral Zone. Rank is indicated on the sleeve cuff.

UNIFORM 2340's The standard duty uniform has undergone some minor modifications by the 2350's. The most significant change is that the undershirt now has a crew neck style rather than a turtleneck style, and in some instances the undershirt is completely omitted. This style of uniform can be seen in the screenshots showing assignment to Starbase Earhart following graduation from Starfleet Academy in 2327. Cortin 'Corey' Zweller is in the small screenshot and on the left in the larger one.

FIELD JACKET For landing party duty Starfleet personnel can choose to wear a large field jacket, which is worn instead of the standard duty jacket. It is heavily lined and therefore is very suitable for a number of different environments. It is also fitted with substantial pockets around the front and rear which can be used to carry a variety of useful equipment.
