In 2270, one year before the Enterprise's launch to investigate V'Ger, Starfleet Command honoured the past historic role of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 in the exploration of space by adopting the Enterprise insignia for the entire Starfleet. This new fleet-wide symbol featured a slightly modified version of the Enterprise command emblem, an arrowhead pointing upward to the heavens, with the addition of a background circle on a graphic device.

ADMIRAL'S UNIFORM
The admiral's two-piece dress uniform is unique among this era's designs in that it features a broad white stripe that runs from the shoulders to the bottom of the tunic. This is worn with trousers of light grey colour which have shoes sewn into the legs, as with all the uniforms of the 2270's. The class-A dress uniform, as seen worn by Admiral Kirk, is used only on formal occasions or at Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco, Earth.

ADMIRAL'S VARIANT 1
This is a short-sleeved shirt with epaulets on the shoulders. The shirt is white, to indicate command status, and it is worn with the usual light grey trousers.

ADMIRAL'S VARIANT 2
An admiral could also wear the standard issue grey duty uniform, shown below

DUTY UNIFORM (shown left)
The standard-issue duty uniform shown is one of several variants. The standard uniform is unisex, superseding the gender-specific uniforms of the 2260's. The uniform shown is a class-A uniform and consists of a light grey tunic and separate matching trousers.

DUTY UNIFORM (shown right)
One of the variants of the standard duty uniform is the all-in-one jumpsuit shown here. It is designed to be more utilitarian than the two-piece uniform, and to fit the wearer like a second skin. It features a Starfleet symbol on the upper part of the left breast.

SCIENCE TWO-PIECE
Although a uniform's colour is no longer used to indicate the wearer's division, only science, medical and engineering personnel wore all-white uniforms. A crewman's specific department is indicated by the background colour to the Starfleet badge. Science personnel are identified by the colour orange on the background to their insignia and on their epaulets - as seen in the screenshot.

SCIENCE ONE-PIECE
The jumpsuit comes in the same colours as the two-piece shown left. Some of these jumpsuits are unusual in that they feature deep pockets on the side of the leg. Members of the science and engineering department no doubt find them useful for storing instruments and tools. The all-in-one jumpsuit with pockets is popular with those in the science department.

MEDIC'S UNIFORM
Medical staff wear a white two-piece uniform. Unlike the other Starfleet uniforms, the tunic is longer and does not feature a buckle or the standard Starfleet insignia but instead the universal medical symbol, the caduceus. The caduceus symbol comprises a snake and a staff. Chief Medical Officer McCoy often wear a white V-neck shirt with a collar, which features the caduceus on the left breast.

CMO'S DUTY UNIFORM
As well as the white tunic and trousers, the Chief Medical Officer could also wear the two-piece grey uniform shown. It is very similar to the grey uniforms worn by the command officers on the bridge of Starfleet space vessels except that it features a deeper V-neck and a small pointed collar. The screenshot shows Dr McCoy wearing a variant, which features a green background to the Starfleet emblem.

CREWMAN'S ONE-PIECE
Many crewmembers, especially those whose work assignments are not on the bridge, wear brown uniforms. The one-piece jumpsuit is styled exactly the same as the other coloured uniforms, with a rounded neck, an oversized oval belt buckle and boots sewn into the bottom of the trouser legs.

CREWMAN'S TWO-PIECE
The brown two-piece uniform is again styled in the same way as the other two-piece uniform, but the tunic hangs loosely over the trousers and is gathered in slightly at the waist. The uniform is not gender-specific and is worn by male and female personnel. Many non-bridge personnel wear the brown two-piece uniform, although other colours are available.

DUTY UNIFORM
This class-A, beige-coloured duty uniform is often worn by operations officers on bridge duty, such as Uhura (pictured). Some of the tunics feature a vent at the sides over the hips. As with the other colour uniforms, this beige variant also comes in a more utilitarian one-piece jumpsuit. Members of the operations department are indicated by a pale gold background to their Starfleet insignia.

DUTY VARIANT
Operations officers who worked on the bridge, such as Mr Sulu (pictured), instead of the usual duty uniform, could choose to wear this variant, which is a two-piece, class-B unifrom. Again, it is beige and slightly gathered at the waist with an oval buckle, but the shirt has short sleeves and a deeper V-neck. Variations on the usual duty uniform allows for greater comfort.

DUTY UNIFORM
The 2271 Starfleet uniforms provide more choice in uniform variants than at any other time in Starfleet history. For instance, operations officers on the bridge have a choice of the two-piece uniform, the short-sleeved shirt or this jumpsuit. Beige uniforms, including the jumpsuit, are most often worn by those in the operations department.

SECURITY OFFICER
The uniform comprises a white jumpsuit overlaid with thick protective armour. The uniform includes a breastplate that extends down to protect much of the officer' torso, together with a tight-fitting helmet which bears the Starfleet insignia on the front. The light body armour provides extra protection in combat.

LANDING PARTY
On landing party missions, officers and other crewmembers wear field jackets. The jacket is the first of its kind to be used since at least 2254, [The Cage]. The field jacket of 2271 is made of a heavier material than the standard tunic uniform, and this is intended to offer the upper body more protection. The jacket is tan in colour and has a number of large pockets for tools and equipment.

STATION PERSONNEL
In 2271 different uniforms are in use on space stations. On the Epsilon IX Monitoring Station open V-necked blue-, grey- or tan-coloured duty uniforms are the norm. These two-piece uniforms feature a tunic-style shrt that is tied at the waist and hangs over the trousers. Personnel assigned to Epsilon IX wear different insignia on their left breast, namely an upright satellite dish.
