YELLOW ALERT Although the events in [TOS] go up to 2269, when Captain Kirk's 5-year mission ends, the uniform era dealt with is actually up to the moment in 2270 when Starfleet chooses to adopt the Enterprise NCC-1701 emblem for all of Starfleet and to restyle the uniforms.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

[TOS: The Man Trap]

Crewman Barnhart, pictured, in 2266 [TOS: Season 1: The Man Trap]. Sources do not mention Barnhart's garment or equipment, but it is Starfleet-issue protective clothing. It does not protect him, however, when (off-screen) he is attacked by the M-113 creature known to fans as 'the salt vampire'. Barnhart dies horribly and his body is drained of salt.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUIT/SPACESUIT

[TOS: The Naked Time]

An environmental suit version is seen in [TOS: Season 1: The Naked Time], although it is not a fully sealed unit and therefore should perhaps more properly be termed 'protective clothing'. That version is not seen again, but Starfleet versions thereafter are based on it.

A different style of environmental suit is seen in [TOS: Season 3: The Tholian Web]. Unlike [TOS: Season 1: The Naked Time] it is a full spacesuit rather.
