Scans are labelled "Uniforms 2266" because that is the year the illustrations are for, but the events in [TOS] go up to 2269, and the uniform era dealt with is actually up to the time in 2270 when Starfleet chose to adopt the Enterprise NCC-1701 emblem for all of Starfleet and to restyle the uniforms. |

COMMAND UNIFORM Command officers (which include the navigator who on starships is sometimes required to act as captain) wear a mustard-coloured tunic and black trousers. Eventually the trouser bottoms will be worn tucked into the top of the boots. The shirt has a black collar and a patterned gold cuff braid to signify rank. The Starfleet insignia of the particular starship or starbase of the person's assignment is worn over the left breast. SCIENCE UNIFORM |

| DUTY UNIFORM Engineering and security personnel wear bright red shirts, as do other crewmembers such as the ship's historian and astrobiologist. Before 2266 these personnel wore light tan-coloured tunics that resembled the command uniforms. As they are worn by engineering and security personnel, the red shirt is the most common sight on board a starship like USS Enterprise NCC-1701. CAPTAIN'S VARIANT |

The red uniform worn by members of the security department has become notorious among Star Trek fans. It seems that whenever a mysterious unknown force threatens an Enterprise landing party, the poor crew member wearing the red shirt is the one to meet the wrath of a terrifying alien creature - often the "red-shirt" dies horribly. This has led to one of the most famous kinds of in-jokes among Star Trek fans. To end the joke for later stories may have been one reason, as far as the costume designers were concerned, for the later re-organisation of division colours. |

FEMALE UNIFORM Female personnel wear flap-panelled mini-skirts with a stand-up collar. This is the first time in more than 125 years that Starfleet has provided different styles for humanoid men and women, although departmental colours and rank insignia are unisex. The screenshot shows Lt. Uhura (her name means "freedom" in Swahili). DRESS UNIFORM (CAPTAIN'S) |

| DRESS UNIFORM (SCIENCE DIVISION) The blue-coloured dress uniform, reserved for official functions, is worn by science officers. It has the same collar and fastening as the captain's dress uniform, but it does not have the braid around the shoulders. Officers are permitted to customise dress uniforms to honour their culture. As with all dress uniform, any decorations and awards are displayed on the left breast. Screenshots are on Page 6: dress uniform. ENGINEERING COVERALLS |

MEDICAL PERSONNEL (MALE) The Enterprise's chief medical officer and other medical personnel could choose between the standard blue shirt worn by science personnel or a short-sleeved lab tunic. The latter is made from a shinier fabric and has a boat-neck collar, and is worn with a black undershirt/vest. MEDICAL PERSONNEL (FEMALE) |

| PATIENT COVERALL Medical patients are required to wear blue, all-in-one jumpsuits of the same design worn by engineering technicians. Again, the coverall is short-sleeved and is worn with a blue belt and black undershirt. This uniform does not have insignia, leading me to speculate that it is intended to be worn throughout the Federation, in non-Starfleet facilities too, and the wearer thus be immediately recognisable as a medical patient i.e. a person at risk. The screenshot shows Technician Fisher, seen in [TOS: Season 1: The Enemy Within] - screenshots on Page 3. COLONIST OVERALL |

In a penal colony, such as Tantalus V, Dr Tristram Adams, who has taken over from Dr Van Gelder, wears a blue outfit. Van Gelder, who went temporarily insane, is confined as a dangerous prisoner and wears a red coverall.
