YELLOW ALERT

As a result of the spin-off series [TNG], [Star Trek] has become known as [Star Trek: The Original Series] or [TOS] for short.

Kirk's 5-year mission ended in 2269, making its start 2264 (see below re conjecture). The tv series lasted 3 seasons but, unlike later tv series one tv season does not equate to one star year - the dates are Season 1 2265-67, Season 2 2267-68, Season 3 2268-69. These pages relate to uniforms after [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before], the series opener, up to the moment in 2270 when Starfleet redesigned the uniforms at the same time that it adopted USS Enterprise NCC-1701's ship emblem as the emblem for all of Starfleet (but placed on a background circle). [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before], in 2265, has its own separate page - as the uniform style was changed after that episode.

The date of 2264 for James T. Kirk assuming command of USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is conjectured by 'ST Chronology': "Date is conjecture. Assumes [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before] took place 13 months and 12 days into the mission, per one conjectural theory for stardates. (The episode was set on stardate 1312.) This system of determining stardates was not used in later episodes, but is at least useful for pegging the start of Kirk's mission in relation to that episode. This is also reasonably consistent with Captain Harriman's line in [Star Trek VII: Generations] that the Enterprise-B, launched in late 2293, was the first Enterprise in 30 years without Kirk in command." Therefore it is assumed that [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before], which was the second pilot then first episode of the series, took place in 2265 (stardate 1312.4). Modifications were then made to the uniforms, as detailed here.

The last episode of [TOS] is [TOS: Turnabout Intruder], stardate 5928.5, whose planetary setting is Camus II. In [TNG: Legacy] Captain Jean-Luc Picard of USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D refers in his opening log to an "archaeological survey on Camus II" as a behind-the-scenes tribute to [TOS].

STANDARD UNIFORMS

The standard Starfleet uniforms of 2266 are modifications of those of 2265. They retain the principle of a coloured shirt or tunic colour-coded to indicate department with embroidered rank stripes for officers, a pair of unisex black trousers later changed to a tunic or short dress for female personnel starting in [TOS: Charlie X], and black boots. The collar is no longer ribbed but black in a slightly pointed downward style, while that for female personnel is lower and more curved (see diagrams and screenshots on Pages 1-3). Officer ranks are denoted by embroidered stripes on the shirt cuffs.

TRIVIA: Kirk's shirt getting torn has become an affectionate joke amongst fans - Kirk, being an action hero, his shirt always seems to get torn. It actually gets torn only seven times: [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before], [TOS: The Naked Time], torn by himself in [TOS: Miri], [TOS: Shore Leave], [TOS: Court Martial], sliced open by Spock in the duel in [TOS: Amok Time], and ripped during his whipping in [TOS: The Gamesters Of Triskelion].

[DS9: Trials And Tribble-ations]
in this story 2370's Starfleet personnel from Deep Space 9 go back in time to the events seen in [TOS: The Trouble With Tribbles] and have to dress to blend in
The bell-bottoms of the trousers disappear as the trousers are now tucked inside the calf-length black boots. The black boots had to be adjusted because they were hurting the feet of the actors.

The velour shirts of the two pilots had to be changed to non-velour because the material kept shrinking as the result of being laundered daily.

Regularly seen male personnel wear their sideburns pointed (see screenshot of crewmen lined up, below, from [TOS: The Trouble With Tribbles]), an aspect agreed after some discussion by creator Gene Roddenberry with the actors, although this would not seem to be a rigid part of dress code. Female personnel usually wear their hair up if it is long, which would seem to be for practical reasons, adhered to by Starfleet personnel from 2151 into the late 24th century.
