In 2368 Admiral Brand was the superintendent of the Academy [TNG: The First Duty] though she is not given that title, and was still in charge in 2370 [TNG: Journey's End]. In 2372 the Academy Commandant conspired with Admiral Leyton in his attempted coup of the Earth government, allowing the formation of Red Squad, an elite group of Starfleet Academy cadets that Leyton used in his plan. | diamond slot formation | An aerobatic maneuver requiring five single-pilot spacecraft. The outer four craft form up in a diamond shape, with the fifth craft inserting itself into the center or slot of the diamond. The maneuver was used as a demonstration of piloting prowess by cadets at Starfleet Academy. [TNG: The First Duty] | |
| Immelmann turn | Aerobatic maneuver in which a spacecraft executes a steep climb, returning to upright orientation at the crest of the half loop. Inspired by the maneuvers of 20th-century Earth pilot Max Immelmann. The Immelmann turn was used as a demonstration of piloting prowess by cadets at Starfleet Academy. [TNG: The First Duty]. | |
| Kolvoord Starburst | A highly dangerous aerobatic space maneuver performed by five single-pilot spacecraft. Starting in a circular formation, the ships cross within ten meters of each other, and fly off in the opposite direction, igniting their plasma trails during the crossover. The maneuver was banned by Starfleet Academy in the 2260's following an accident that took the lives of five cadets. In 2368, Nova Squadron was attempting to execute the Kolvoord Starburst when the ships collided. All five ships were lost, and Cadet Joshua Albert was killed. [TNG: The First Duty] | |
| Nova Squadron | A team of elite cadet pilots at Starfleet Academy. Nova Squadron was composed of five members who flew small single-pilot ships in aerobatic maneuvers. In 2368, Nova Squadron won the Rigel Cup, a source of considerable pride to all involved. A short time later, on stardate 45703, Nova Squadron was involved in a collision on the Academy Flight Range that destroyed all five craft and resulted in the death of squadron member Joshua Albert. Nova Squadron at that time was commanded by cadet first class Nicholas Locarno (played by Robert Duncan McNeill, who later plays Tom Paris in [Star Trek Voyager]). | Yeager loop | An aerobatic maneuver executed by five single-pilot spacecraft. Starting in a Diamond Slot formation, the five ships would perform an Immelmann turn in concert. The Yeager loop was used as a demonstration of piloting prowess by cadets at Starfleet Academy. [TNG: The First Duty]. Named for one of Chuck Yeager's most famous flight maneuvers; Yeager, an aircraft test pilot, was the first human to fly faster than the speed of sound, on 14 October 1947, mentioned in [TNG: New Ground]. |
