STARFLEET ACADEMY COURSES & ACTIVITIES

audio clipDo YOU want to enter Starfleet Academy? Hear Seven's offer to help with part of the entrance exam. [#148 Imperfection]

This page presents information listed against the courses and activities mentioned in the show. For information about Voyager crew who attended the Academy, and their experiences, see page 1.

Main sources: VC, supplemented by Encyclopaedia, TOSTFF and ST:M. Some information derived from VC has been expanded by me. In addition, I have corrected VC's errors (the biggest mistake is noted below) and I have also covered VC's omissions for both courses and reference data in those and other entries. For some references, more details are given on page 1.

COURSE or ACTIVITY REFERENCE INCLUDING EPISODE NUMBER/NAME
ADVANCED SUBSPACE GEOMETRY When proposing a symmetric warp field should contain, and thus rescue, any instabilities in an alien ship with coaxial warp drive, Paris claims Advanced Subspace Geometry was the one course at the Academy where he actually paid attention. [#88 Vis à Vis]
ANCIENT PHILOSOPHIES Very likely those on USS Voyager who attended the complete Starfleet Academy course did this particular subject as this was a required course [TNG: The Host].
ANTHROPOLOGY When all the Voyager crew (with a few exceptions) are ensnared by a telepathic bio-plasmic lifeform, under its influence Chakotay imagines that he has been offered a position teaching the Anthropology class.
ASTROPHYSICS Paris majored in this course. While he is on Earth in 1996, native Rain Robinson is impressed by Paris' knowledge, and he tells her he majored in Astrophysics at Starfleet Academy. "Never heard of it," says Rain. "East coast school," replies Paris! [#50 and #51 Future's End]
ASTRO THEORY 101 Torres recalls doging a few punches in the lab in this course. Chakotay jokes that only she could start a brawl in Astro Theory 101. [#50 and #51 Future's End]
BIOCHEMISTRY At a staff meeting, citing Paris' two semesters of biochemistry at Starfleet Academy, Janeway asigns him to study as a field medic under the Doctor. [#3 Parallax]
BOTANICAL SCIENCE Torres took this class. [#40 Tuvix]
DIPLOMACY Janeway's Diplomacy professor used to say that the opening 20 minutes of a first contact situation are the most crucial. [#38 Innocence]
ENTRANCE EXAM While in the Delta Quadrant, Icheb decides he wants to take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam and work to become a member of Starfleet, aided by members of the Voyager crew. His studies include Warp Mechanics [#158 Lineage], Earth Literature [#164 Human Error] and Early Starfleet History [#165 Q2]. Janeway gives him a pass in the latter subject after he demonstrates comprehensive, even exhaustive, knowledge of the subject.
Not mentioned in [Star Trek Voyager]: Icheb would be expected at some stage to pass the hyperspace physics test, one portion of the entrance examination [TNG: Coming of Age].
Not mentioned in [Star Trek Voyager]: It is not known if Voyager personnel administered to Icheb the equivalent of the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program, a six-week course designed to prepare prospective cadets for the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. Program admission is by testing only, and applicants are required to perform satisfactorily on a stress-reactions test, spatial-orientation test, and deductive-reasoning test. Testing for admission requires approximately four days. [DS9: Facets].
EXO-CHEMISTRY Very likely those on USS Voyager who attended the complete Starfleet Academy course did this particular subject as this was a required course [TNG: Time's Arrow].
EXO-GENETICS Janeway took this course in her senior year. The only question she got wrong, preventing her from getting an A grade, dealt with nucleotide resonance frequency. [#113 The Fight]
FRACTAL CALCULUS Janeway took this course, taught by Admiral Patterson. [#118 Relativity] (It is possible that he was not an Admiral when he taught Janeway. It is rather likely considering the length of Janeway's career before she captains USS Voyager.)
INTERSPECIES ETHICS A class at the Academy, but not one taught by Admiral Nimembeh. Janeway tests whether Chakotay is really himself and not a member of Species 8472 in disguise by mentioning that Nimembeh taught Interspecies Ethics, but Chakotay proves he is really Chakotay by correcting her that he taught Tactical Analysis (which of course she knew - her 'mistake' was the test). [#98 In The Flesh] (Source VC incorrectly states that the Admiral taught this class; the tv dialogue contradicts VC.)
INTERSPECIES PROTOCOL A required one semester course, dealing with the proper way to conduct oneself in interspecies affairs. It is mentioned when Janeway 'dresses down' Kim for his affair, hitherto secret, with Derran Tal of the Varro species. [#111 The Disease]
INTERSTELLAR HISTORY Torres nearly failed this course. She mentions this while playing a trivia quiz with Kim in a broken down turbolift in [#76 and #77 Year Of Hell].
KLINGON PHYSIOLOGY Janeway recalls that a Klingon physiology course was taught by visiting Prof. H'ohk and that he demanded nothing less than perfection. [#60 Darkling] (I believe he would have been a 'visiting professor' because the Klingon Empire is not a member of the Federation.)
PHYSICAL TRAINING Paris attended the Starfleet Academy base outside Marseilles, France, for his physical training and spent most of his second semester at the bar/nightclub Chez Sandrine. [#6 The Cloud]
QUANTUM CHEMISTRY Kim's Starfleet Academy room-mate, James Mooney MacAllister, helped him through this fourth year course. [#6 The Cloud] MacAllister studied algorithms until dawn, so Kim could only get to sleep by wearing an eye-patch (seen only in that episode).
SHUTTLE PILOTING Chakotay trained as a pilot in North America in his first year at the Academy, then went to Venus for a couple of months to learn how to handle atmospheric storms, followed by a semester in the Sol system asteroid belt. [#50 and #51 Future's End]
STATISTICAL MECHANICS Very likely those on USS Voyager who attended the complete Starfleet Academy course did this particular subject as this was a required course [TNG: The First Duty].
STARFLEET HISTORY Kim learned about the era of Kirk and Spock in this course. [#44 Flashback]
STELLAR CARTOGRAPHY Paris tells the Doctor that he, Paris, failed this course after being dumped by his first love, Sisi Crabtree. [#35 Lifesigns]
SPACE WALKS Cadets participate in simulated space walks during their first two years at the Academy. In year 3 a 6-week course of actual space walks is required so that cadest get used to them. Torres left the Academy before her third year and never experienced real space walks. [#71 Day Of Honor]
SURVIVAL STRATEGIES Commander Zakarian taught a survival course. His nickname was 'Sneezy' or 'Old Sneezy', and he was not well-liked. Torres claims to know more survival tricks than he does. [#1 and #2 Caretaker]. Paris achieved a B-minus grade in this course which was taught by his father Admiral Paris. [#23 Parturition]
Chakotay refers to survival classes at the Academy consisting of surprise tactical simulations where cadets are dropped off in the woods with no chance to prepare. [#66 Displaced]
TACTICAL ANALYSIS A class taught by Admiral Nimembeh. Janeway tests whether Chakotay is really himself rather than a member of Species 8472 in disguise by discussing this. [#98 In The Flesh]
TEMPORAL MECHANICS Chakotay failed this course, which was taught by Prof. Vassbinder [#76 and #77 Year Of Hell]. (Presumably this is the same Vassbinder mentioned in [TNG: Timescape] and [TNG: Journey's End].)
TRACK AND FIELD Torres was on the Academy decathlon team. The track-and-field coach was furious with her when she dropped out. [#42 and #43 Basics]
TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM TECHNOLOGY While in Henry Starling's office, Janeway confides to Chakotay that she never learned to type, since this was not a required course at the Academy. [#50 and #51 Future's End]
VELOCITY Kim was captain of the Academy's Velocity team. Kim tells lover Derran Tal: "I'm like some kind of Borg drone, programmed, except that I was designed to be the perfect Starfleet officer: top of his class, captain of the Velocity team, interstellar honours, first field assignment - bridge officer on a starship, every cadet's dream come true." [#111 The Disease]
ZERO-G TRAINING This course takes place during the first year at the Academy. Janeway participated in training for zero-g in the Coral Sea. [#140 Good Shepherd]

Compulsory courses Apart from those specified as such above, certain courses were mandatory e.g. Ancient Philosophies [TNG: The Host], Statistical Mechanics [TNG: The First Duty], the exochemistry course [TNG: Time's Arrow].

Behind-the-scenes
The motto of Starfleet Academy is a paraphrase of Ex luna scientia (from the moon, knowledge), the Apollo 13 motto. That in turn was a paraphrase of Ex tridens scientia (from the sea, knowledge), the motto of the United States Navy. The Starfleet Academy emblem (seen at the top of this page) is based on a design by Joe Senna.

Here is behind-the-scenes information about the sets.
