  1. Description of image size: Kilobyte sizes of the maps and diagrams in the STAR CHARTS section are listed at the Index - for which, click the navigation link below. Where the size is over 100Kb, there is a Red Alert above the image and the size is also given in the Alt Text of the document. To read Alt Text you need to have the Alt Text facility enabled in your browser.

  2.
  3. Image re-organisation: Mainly to minimise filesizes for download, I have organised some images differently from the STSC book, even ones that appear on the same page or the same two-page spread.

  4.
  5. STSC error corrections: I have corrected several STSC factual errors on the images concerned e.g. STSC incorrectly says "Janus IV" instead of "Janus VI", or "Yalitia" when Encyclopaedia and TOSTFF spell its inhabitants as "Yallitians". The corrections are not noted in text below the image unless practical e.g. in the Planetary Classification series which includes text information below each image. In the Planetary Classification series, I also note discrepancies between STSC and Encyclopaedia. The latter canon authority tends to lead other canon sources such as TOSTFF and VC. As regards STSC's serious error in ignoring (or forgetting) that USS Voyager travelled the large distance to Rinax, in [#15 Jetrel], see Star Chart: USS Voyager's Route: 2371 for a detailed note.

  6.
  7. STSC two-page images: Where images go across the fold or spine of the book, some images do not have continuity but leave a gap. I have not omitted to scan a part of the image. This is obvious when the pages are laid out flat! (Pages were removed from the spine by a very sharp instrument - my husband.) I have sometimes put a narrow white line to indicate this. Once or twice I have abutted the scans of the two pages, even if they do not quite fit together, because the "fill in" to be imagined is negligible and the brain can be expected to accept the continuity far more easily than, say, a part of the image where lots of lines "need" to meet to appear visually acceptable. Occasionally, where the image is not too complicated and finishing off or filling in the graphics work is not too time-consuming, I have completed the image using my graphics programs.

  9. United Federation of Planets Charts I-IV errors and omissions In STSC these charts comprise four pages, each comprising a two-page foldout.
    1. The originals in STSC do not always join seamlessly because parts are omitted (at least, in the copy of STSC that I have), so I have "filled in" the missing parts.
    2. The description of Yed Posterior in the original has "(Epsilon Ophiu" and part of what seems to be a "c" - judging from other mentions in the same region, I believe this is an omission in the original and should read "(Epsilon Ophiuci)" and I have therefore completed it as such.
    3. Other errors, e.g. "Elora" near the Briar Patch (probably "Ellora"), I have left but with an accompanying text explanation. Some errors seem to be misprints. I have corrected some, not others e.g. the misspelling of Betelgeuse (correctly spelt elsewhere on the charts) obviously required correction. But with other cases, e.g. "Lamda" instead of "Lambda", I have not made any change as I defer to the Star Trek cartographer Geoffrey Mandel but I give an accompanying text explanation although not necessarily with the star chart (or segment thereof), therefore see A-Z of UFP Charts I-IV. I note only major errors for STSC's star charts which appear on site, not those that I noticed elsewhere in STSC.
    4. Regarding the tiny white unlabelled stars (forming the starfield background), my images do not contain every single one as per the original, and they are not necessarily all in the same relative places as in the original. However, every effort was made to retain them and to keep them in the same relative size and place. Every effort was made not to add any where there were none. If as a result I have omitted your own home planet (which, of course, means the world to you), I apologise.
    5. Despite every effort to replicate the original charts, there may be slight errors in the positions of some stars or space facilities.
    6. The lefthand edges of certain segments may extend leftwards further or less than the originals, due to making good the removal of the pages from the spine.
    7. I scanned at 600 dpi. Scanning at a lower dpi was felt inadequate. Scanning at a higher dpi produced images too large for PaintShop Pro 6 or 8 to handle. This produced a total image of 21,500 pixels wide by 14,200 pixels high, 102,271Kb. Due to memory problems caused by this large size (and I have an above-average capacity computer) (even with increasing available memory, disabling other applications, and emptying the clipboard and command history after every action), only a few graphics functions were possible e.g. working with layers was not permitted and "undo" could not be used - large handicaps. The graphics programs do not operate in safe mode. Part-way through I was able to work on small extracted selections. Towards the end I had to manually slice the image, reduce the slices, then join them again as the programs would not crop or reduce, in order to load them into PaintShop Pro8 to do final adjustments, cropping and grid-slicing. The work took many many hours. Whilst at times my blood-curdling screams of exasperation resounded through subspace, an advantage was that I came to know the charts very well indeed. Throughout the STAR CHARTS section, extracts of the UFP Charts I-IV appear at various sizes, with some being larger-size excerpts.

  10. Map or diagram extracts These appear most often in Stellar Cartography notes as regards particular places. Extracts are usually taken from my scanned originals and reduced in size, and therefore may be larger than the complete map as it appears on site. Occasionally I have amended the extract to show more or fewer places than the original, in order to provide more information or omit distractions (e.g. the very tail-end of a place-name - usually, if an extract is done to include complete place names, then a simple rectangle shape would not be possible).

  12. STSC: Book source: The book source of each image, and who scanned it (i.e. this site), are labelled on the image.

  13.
  14. STSC: Watermarks: Please do not remove watermarks.

  15.
  16. How to save images / hot-linking disabled: If you wish to save images, please save them to your computer. Please do not attempt to hot-link (direct-link) to images - the option to disable hot-linking has been selected at server level, and this folder is one that I move more often than others.

  17.
  18. To webmasters: If you display any images, from this section or the rest of the site, please see above 'Saving images / hot-linking disabled'. Please put images on your server for faster download for your visitors, rather than attempt to hot-link to this site. Due to the amount of time and effort I have spent (e.g. on the UFP Charts I-IV 15+ hours excluding HTML coding), I definitely require please (and as per Netiquette) a credit-link to my Bridge at www.star-trek-voyager.net if any images from this site section are used elsewhere. Thanks!

  20. Difference in scanners re image quality: This section has been done using two different scanners. The newer one produces better quality images (I am told it is not simply a matter of the d.p.i. level). I shall replace some older scans in due course, but as they require considerable additional graphics work it will take time. Replacement of the few older scans is classed as minor and therefore will not be announced in WHAT'S NEW.
