Starbases
map or diagram extract
Starbases Federation starbases are any one of over five hundred command, scientific, strategic, service, and supply posts operated by the Federation Starfleet, located throughout Federation space and beyond. Many starbases are located on planetary surfaces e.g. Starbase Montgomery (a planetside facility noted in [TNG: The Icarus Factor], while others are space stations. No specific (Federation) starbase is mentioned in [Voyager]. (Starfleet's shipbuilding yard at Utopia Planitia is seen, in [#118 Relativity.) In [#3 Parallax], Janeway says in her captain's log: "Stardate 48439.7. As we maintain a course back to the Alpha Quadrant, we're conducting what would normally be routine maintenance to the ship - routine, that is, if we had access to a starbase." A list of Federation starbases with Star Trek episode or film references is at VOYCABULARY illustrated encyclopaedia. Toward the end of December 2154, in [Enterprise: Bound], the NX-01 Enterprise is on course for the Berengarius system, a potential site for the first in a series of proposed Starbases. Not all starbases are numbered. Deep Space 9 is designated as a Starbase, for instance. Designations include Starbase Earhart, also known as Farspace Starbase Earhart, [TNG: Samaritan Snare] [TNG: Tapestry], named for aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart (born 1898, disappeared from Earth in 1937, died in the Delta Quadrant in the 24th or 25th century, ref. [#20 The 37's]). Starbase G-6 is located near the Sigma III Solar System, [TNG: Hide And Q]; Starbase Lya III is mentioned in [TNG: The Defector] and [TNG: The Hunted]; and Xendi Starbase 9 is noted in [TNG: The Battle].
Starbase 718 (map excerpt) is the highest numbered starbase. Located near the Romulan Neutral Zone, it was, in [TNG: The Neutral Zone], the location of an emergency conference that Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D attended in late 2364 to discuss the possibility of a new Romulan incursion. The meeting was triggered by the loss of communications with starbases and outposts near the Romulan Neutral Zone, although this was later believed to be due to Borg activity. This was shortly before the Romulans ended a 53-year period of isolationism that had begun in 2311. After this episode was made, it was decided that starbase numbers should not go much higher than 500.
