Nausicaans are intelligent humanoid lifeforms. Their civilisation is a space-faring society. Some Nausicaans have earned a reputation for being surly, ill-tempered, quick to violence, and very tall.

In [#165 Q2], Diplomacy Scenario 12-A is a holographic exercise invoked by Chakotay in 2377 to test the mettle of Q's son, called Q2. The holoprogram is set in USS Voyager's briefing room, and comprises a diplomatic dispute about mining rights on a planetoid. The Nausicaan representative is one of several Alpha Quadrant species represented in the holoscenario. The holographic Nausicaan delegate sees Chakotay and Q2 enter, and demands: "What are you doing here, Starfleet?"

In 2327, just after his graduation from Starfleet Academy, Ensign Jean-Luc Picard was involved in a fight with three Nausicaans while on leave at Starbase Earhart. (The starbase was named for aviatrix Amelia Earhart, whom Voyager crewmembers encounter in late 2371 in the Delta Quadrant, in [#20 The 37's].) One Nausicaan stabbed Picard through the heart, severely injuring the young ensign, who required cardiac replacement surgery, [TNG: Samaritan Snare]. Many years later, Picard relived the incident through Q's intervention, [TNG: Tapestry]. (In [TNG: Tapestry] Q comments that the injury to Picard's heart occurred "30 years ago" which would set the Nausicaan incident in 2338. However, [TNG: The First Duty] establishes that Picard graduated in 2327.) In 2371, a band of Nausicaan raiders used an ultrasonic generator to break into and rob the central museum on Remmil VI, [DS9: Heart of Stone]. In 2372, two Nausicaan bodyguards accompanied a Ferengi Commerce Authority's official, Liquidator Brunt, to Deep Space 9 to investigate a Ferengi labour union on strike (an illegal action) against Quark's Bar. The bodyguards severely beat Quark in order to intimidate his brother Rom into ending the strike, [DS9: Bar Association]. For the origin of the name "Nausicaa", see Historical Origins Of Names.

It is a Federation crime to possess or sell Denevan crystals, but in late 2374, Quark made a profit of 200 bars of latinum when he sold Denevan crystals to a Nausicaan entrepreneur, [DS9: The Sound of Her Voice]. Quark is a Ferengi and the Ferengi Alliance is not a member of the Federation. Nausicaa is not a member of the Federation either - not listed in the list of Federation members, i.e. full members, in source STSC.
