Iconians An ancient, highly advanced civilisation that mastered the technique of dimensional transport across interstellar distances. The Iconians, referred to in ancient texts as 'Demons of Air and Darkness' were all believed destroyed some 200,000 years ago by an orbital bombardment that devastated the surface of their planet. It has been speculated that the Iconians did not all perish in the attacks, but rather used their gateway technology to escape to other nearby planets. The similarity between the Iconian language and Dewan, Iccobar, and Dinasian has been cited as evidence to support this theory. The first known discovery of an Iconian gateway in modern times was in 2365 by the crew of the Starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D on the planet Iconia. The Enterprise-D crew destroyed the gateway rather than allow it to fall into Romulan hands. [TNG: Contagion]. A second gateway was discovered by Dominion scientists in 2372 on planet Vandros IV in the Gamma Quadrant. Rebel Jem'Hadar soldiers attempted to seize the gateway, but were prevented from doing so by an unusual joint mission of Jem'Hadar and Federation forces that destroyed the gateway mechanism and its surrounding building. [DS9: To The Death]

In early 2377, in [#152 Inside Man], following the failure of an attempt to reach the Alpha Quadrant quickly by means of a geodesic fold, Paris (later backed up by Torres) fools Kim into believing that there may soon be a similarly fast method home, by mentioning an Iconian scientist:

Paris: "If it'll make you feel any better, I'll let you know a little secret. I was on the Bridge this morning when we received a hail from an Iconian scientist. He claims to have a transdimensional gateway that can take us anywhere in the galaxy."
Kim: "I'm not that gullible."
