Betazed is a Class-M planet in the Alpha Quadrant. The biennial Trade Agreements Conference was held on Betazed in 2366, [TNG: Menage à Troi].

Lon Suder and Deanna Troi are Betazoids, an telepathically empathic species whose home planet is Betazed in the Alpha Quadrant. In 2372 Ensign Suder, a former Maquis, is demoted and detained indefinitely in his quarters after he murders Frank Darwin, but in early 2373 he helps recover Voyager from a Kazon-Nistrim occupying force. Those events are depicted in [#32 Meld] and [#42 and #43 Basics]. Counsellor Deanna Troi, a senior officer serving under Captain Picard, features in [TNG] and [Star Trek VIII: First Contact], [Star Trek IX: Insurrection] and [Star Trek X: Nemesis], and, from the Alpha Quadrant, she indirectly aids Voyager's return to Earth when she comes to the help of her friend and counselling patient Reg Barclay. She is seen in [#130 Pathfinder], [#144 Life Line] and [#152 Inside Man]. Lake Cataria is one of Deanna Troi's favorite places on Betazed. She had devised a holodeck recreation of the locale on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, [TNG: All Good Things].

Betazoids are incapable of reading Ferengi, Breen or Dopterian minds, possibly a result of the unusual four-lobed construction of their brains, [TNG: Menage à Troi] [DS9: The Forsaken]. Betazoids are also unable to read Ullians, [TNG: Violations]. The normal gestation period of a Betazoid is ten months, [TNG: The Child].

Deanna's mother, Lwaxana, holds a number of prestigious titles, including Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed, first noted in [TNG: Haven]. Lwaxana became a full ambassador of Betazed in 2365, [TNG: Manhunt]. Lwaxana is played by Majel Barrett, who also voices the LCARS computer throughout almost all of [TNG], [DS9] and [Voyager]. She also played Number One and Nurse Chapel in [TOS]. Lwaxana is mentioned and pictured in parts of DEANNA TROI INDEX.
