Janet's Star Trek Voyager Site

Voyager Crew Personae

KATHRYN JANEWAY

In [Fair Haven], when Janeway visits Michael Sullivan in his pub one night shortly after midnight, she tells him that her name is Kathryn and that her uncle and aunt owned property in County Clare. At this, he begins calling her Katie O'Clare.

The information Janeway gives him as Katie O'Clare is true from Janeway's perspective and equally plausibly true from Katie O'Clare's perspective e.g. that she is just passing through and has been on the road for "five years, almost six", which is how long the Voyager crew has been stranded in the Delta Quadrant. She tells him: "I have an aunt who used to have a saying like that: 'A stranger is a friend you just haven't met yet.' She had an Irish temper too. She and my uncle had a place not far from here, in County Clare." It is possible that the latter information is really true.

In [Spirit Folk], her uncle's and aunt's possession of a farm in County Clare is no longer in the past tense, and she tells Sullivan that she has been helping them out.

She also tells him, which we know is not true: "....they've got a goat that could argue Mossie Donegan's talking pig under the table."

Edith (far right) tells her tale
While in Fair Haven, Janeway rescues Mary, the daughter of Edith Mulchaey, after she falls down a well. Edith ascribes magical powers to Katie O'Clare (Janeway), telling the people in Sullivan's Pub: "I was up at Ballahick Farm with Mary. She was playing near the well. Somehow she lost her footing and fell in. I was so frightened I didn't know what to do. So I ran to the Colby's to get some help. But when we returned, there was Mary in the meadow, talking with Katie O'Clare. There wasn't a scratch on her! Katie said I must've been mistaken when I saw her fall. It was no mistake." audio clip

Janeway remains known by the name of Katie O'Clare to Sullivan and the other holographic inhabitants of Fair Haven until Sullivan is transported to Voyager's bridge. There she tells him her name is Kathryn Janeway, and that she is the captain of Voyager. She does not tell him that he and the Fair Haven residents are holograms but instead lets him/them think the Voyager crew are travellers from the future who like to explore and spend time in Fair Haven.

Janeway: "Have you ever read 'The Time Machine' by H.G. Wells?" Sullivan: "Are you telling me you've travelled back through time?" Janeway: "In a manner of speaking." audio clip

Janeway returns with Sullivan to Fair Haven, to St. Mary's Church where the townsfolk are about to take Paris, Kim and the Doctor into the square, tie them to lamp posts at the base of which they have piled kindling and burn them alive (as in witch-burning). She and Sullivan together persuade the townsfolk to put aside their differences with the Voyager crew, and to (re-)kindle instead the friendships they have shared.

Janeway tells the villagers: "And we're not spirit folk. Some of our technology may seem like magic, but I assure you it's not. If you want, we'll leave and never bother you again. But we'd prefer to find some way to keep our friendship alive." Sullivan concludes his address to the townsfolk by echoing words spoken to him earlier by Janeway's: "Just because we're from different worlds, doesn't mean we can't care from each other." audio clip

After this, Janeway's persona as Katie O'Clare is known by the Fair Haven holograms as being a persona, but the persona has slightly changed - they think she and the other Voyager crew are time travellers with sophisticated technology. Sullivan calls her Katie, then adds tentatively: "'Kathryn' now, is it?"
