HARRY KIM

Harry Kim is known by his real name in Fair Haven.

In [Fair Haven], Kim meets the beautiful Maggie O'Halloran, the flower seller, and there is an immediate mutual romantic attraction.

But Paris informs Kim that she is promised to "a pig-farmer with a very large rake". When Kim asks if she has a sister, Paris tells him, no doubt to put him off, that she has wooden teeth. Kim says that the holoprogram could be changed but Paris does not wish to do that. When the holoprogram is later badly damaged as the result of Voyager encountering a class 9 neutronic wavefront and having to shut down the holodecks without running through the systems shut-down sequence, Kim half-jokingly suggests Maggie as one of the elements they should save. However, after six or seven weeks, Paris (perhaps with Kim's assistance, and/or maybe that of Ensign Tabor a Bajoran crewmember seen in [#102 Nothing Human] and [#150 Repression] who is noted for his holographic expertise) restores the Fair Haven program.

In [Fair Haven], Harry Kim ruins Liam's standing as an arm-wrestling champion, undefeated for three years in four counties. The match takes place in Sullivan's pub. Seamus bets three shillings on Liam. The Doctor places a bet of five shillings on Liam and then, upon Paris' protest that he will hurt Kim's feelings, two shillings on Kim.

The Doctor goes over to the table where Kim and Liam are ready to begin the arm-wrestling contest. "Gentlemen!" He raps a glass three times on the table as the signal to begin.
The sound of the excited crowd is deafening as they shout support for their man. The Doctor joins in, calling out: "Go on, Mr Kim, show him what for!"

Liam forces Kim's arm right over until it touches the table....almost! But then Kim summons up extra strength and, shouting with the effort, forces Liam's arm over.....and wins! He is thrilled!

Seamus to Liam: "Come on, my boy, push, push!"

Doctor: "Try! Try!"  Kim: "I'm trying!"  Doctor: "Come on, try harder!"

Seamus to Liam: "You've got him, you've got him."
Doctor to Kim: "You're losing!"

Kim starts to turn the tide.

Seamus: "What in God's name...? Come on, Liam, push!"

Victorious Kim: "Yes! Yes!"

After the Fair Haven holoprogram is restored, approximately six or seven weeks after the neutronic wavefront encounter, Kim takes up his relationship with Maggie where he left off. He replicates a bouquet of Broadway lilies to give to her. They chat in the pub and then go for a romantic moonlit stroll along the cobbled high street. Kim tells her about his life - in his persona Ensign Kim is the Captain of his ship, a sea ship, and this appeals immensely to Maggie.

Kim: "A captain's only as good as his crew."
Maggie: "It must be lonely out there on the sea with only the stars to guide you."
Kim: "Sometimes, during the night watch, with timbers creaking and the dark water stretching out as far as the eye can see, you can believe you're the only man in the world."
Maggie: "Maybe you should think about settling down on dry land."
Kim: "Well, believe me, I do, as often as I think of you."

When Seamus witnesses Paris repairing his crashed car by saying: "Computer, replace damaged tyre." and the wheel is replaced as if by magic, Seamus harbours the suspicion that Paris and his friends from out of town are spirit folk. When Kim is on his date with Maggie, Paris decides to play a prank on him and adjusts Maggie's holoprogram so that she turns into a cow just as Kim is about to kiss her! This is described in detail in Holocharacters: Maggie O'Halloran and the [Spirit Folk] Episode Guide. Unfortunately, this prank is witnessed by Seamus and Milo, as is Kim's response - he is not horrified, but cross, and more importantly accepts that Paris is able to do such a thing. Father Mulligan (the Doctor) restores Maggie's holoprogram to its original visual parameters, but she tells Milo and Seamus of a strange dream wherein she wandered around with nothing but a bell around her neck. audio clipThis continues a potentially fatal train of events (the screenshot shows Kim and Paris tied up in the church; they are later threatened with burning alive), and ends up with Janeway having to explain to the superstitious townsfolk that the Voyager crew are not spirit folk. She does not explain (to Michael Sullivan) that the townsfolk are holograms, but allows them to think the Voyager crew are time travellers from the future, who like to spend time in Fair Haven. She informs them that she, Tom Paris, Harry Kim and the others, use technology but it is not magic. The townsfolk forgive the Voyager crewmembers and friendships are resumed, but with the visitors now known as friendly time travellers. These events are described in detail in Holocharacters: Seamus Driscol and the [Spirit Folk] Episode Guide.

Afterwards Kim talks to her about it and she, who is still taken with him, replies: "Well, I suppose I can forgive and forget. It's not often you meet a handsome man from outer space." and she puts a flower in his buttonhole. He stays to talk with her as Paris, Seamus and Milo head for Sullivan's pub.

Earlier, when Kim and Paris, wearing their Starfleet uniforms, called up the Michael Sullivan holoprogram in Voyager's holographic research laboratory, he is actually aware of his surroundings but pretends not to be in the hope that spirit folk Kim and Paris will return him to Fair Haven unharmed. As part of the pretence, Sullivan tells Kim that Liam wants an arm-wrestling re-match. Kim agrees, and so possibly the re-match is one event that will take place.

In [Fair Haven], Kim visits Fair Haven wearing his Starfleet uniform, with Paris, in order to take tricorder scans and assess the damage wrought by shutting down the holoprogram without running through the holodeck shut-down sequence. (Holocharacters are programmed not to see the uniform as anything out of the ordinary.) But otherwise Kim dresses to blend in with the holoscenario. Below are screenshots showing Harry Kim's clothes worn as part of his persona:
