MICHAEL SULLIVAN : Page 1

Man who owns Sullivan's Pub public house in the Fair Haven holoprogram. In [Fair Haven], his original program parameters are that he has a simple outlook, he is not one for reading, and he has a wife named Francis (known as Frannie).

Frannie, and Michael Sullivan

Janeway first meets Michael Sullivan, in his pub, during the arm-wrestling contest between Liam and Harry Kim

Janeway and Michael Sullivan smile at each other when she leaves the pub after their first meeting

When Janeway visits him after midnight to make his acquaintance, he makes her tea (he has just made a pot), and calls her Katie O'Clare when she says she has an aunt and uncle who come from County Clare. Sullivan is quite good at playing rings, although he is not averse to a spot of lighthearted cheating when he and Katie enjoy a good time playing a game of rings. The occasion when Janeway and Michael Sullivan version 1 spend time alone together:

Janeway enters Sullivan's pub as Sullivan is clearing up after the evening's business.
Despite the late hour, Sullivan is happy to provide drinks. "What'll it be?"

Janeway: "A cup of tea would be nice."

Sullivan: "I just made one. Cream?"
Janeway: "Please."
Sullivan: "So, what brings you to Fair Haven, Miss-"
Janeway: "Kathryn. I'm just passing through, on my way home."

Sullivan: "How long have you been on the road?"
Janeway: "Five years, almost six."
Sullivan: "You must be homesick."
Janeway: "No." She admits: "Sometimes." She takes the cup of tea. "Thank you."

Sullivan toasts her in Gaelic.
Janeway: "Translation?"
Sullivan: "A hundred thousand welcomes. It's an old Irish saying. We're all friends here."

Janeway: "I have an aunt who used to have a saying like that: 'A stranger is a friend you just haven't met yet.'"

Sullivan: "Definitely Irish."
Janeway: "She had an Irish temper too. She and my uncle had a place not far from here, in County Clare."

Sullivan: "Oh, so you're closer to home than you think, Katie O'Clare."

Janeway puts the cup down. "You know, it's later than I thought and I've kept you long enough." She gets up abruptly.

Sullivan: "Oh no, stay a while. Didn't your auntie teach you that it's impolite to leave without playing a game of rings?"
Janeway: "I really can't, but thanks for the tea."

She turns her back and heads for the door but his next words stop her. "Afraid you'll lose?"

She turns to face him. "I rarely lose."
Sullivan: "Prove it."
Janeway holds up one finger: "One game."

Sullivan: "I'll set them up."

Later, Sullivan throws another ring and it lands on a peg.
Sullivan: "Another ringer."
Janeway: "Well, I'm not surprised. You stepped over the beer stain."
Sullivan: "I did not."
Janeway: "You did too! By half a boot, and then you moved back, hoping I wouldn't notice."

Sullivan: "These boots are half a size too large, so in reality my toes never crossed the line."

He collects the rings.

He hands the rings to her. "Your turn."
Janeway kisses the ring she is about to throw. "For luck."
Sullivan grins. "Getting sweet with the rings isn't going to help you."
Janeway: "We'll see." She throws and the ring clatters on the floor after hitting the board and missing the pegs. "Damn."
Sullivan: "The devil won't help you either."
Janeway gives up on rings. "Well, maybe rings aren't my forte after all. Would you care to arm-wrestle?"

Sullivan: "That's not a woman's game, Katie. You could get hurt."
Janeway: "I'm stronger than I look."
He raises his arm. She seizes his hand and immediately starts forcing his arm over. He laughs, surprised.
Sullivan: "That's quite a grip you have."
Janeway: "Not bad yourself."
Sullivan: "I couldn't help but notice that you have your leg braced against the bar."
Janeway laughs: "How else do you expect me to win?!"

She makes him laugh as her other hand joins in, so that she is using both hands against his one.
Sullivan nearly loses and gasps: "Well, will we call it a draw?"
Janeway, who is laughing: "Sounds good to me!"
She lets go, worn out, and downs a syntheholic drink.
Sullivan: "Oh!" He teases: "Will you run a foot-race down to the station and back?" She throws back her head, laughing.

Sullivan: "It's good to make a new friend. You've a nice way about you."

Janeway: "Flattery is the food of fools."
Sullivan: "Another pearl of wisdom from your auntie."
Janeway: "No. Jonathan Swift."
Sullivan: "Swift? Never heard of him."
Janeway is surprised. "He was an author."
Sullivan: "I was never one for reading."
Janeway: "That's too bad. Some of the greatest authors in the world are Irish."
Sullivan: "Well, they say that Dr Gilroy has a library of books and, well, next time I see him I'll ask him if I can borrow one or two."

A woman comes into the bar from the private staff area. She says: "Good morning."
Sullivan: "Good morning." He checks the time. "Oh my God, will you look at the time."

Sullivan: "Frannie, come here, there's someone I want you to meet." To Janeway: "Katie O'Clare, this is my wife Frances."

Janeway and Frannie shake hands. Janeway says: "Pleased to meet you." but is not really all that pleased.
Frannie: "I hope Michael hasn't been bending your ear all night long."

Janeway jokes: "My ear, my elbow...."
Frannie looks puzzled.
Sullivan explains: "We were arm-wrestling."
Frannie: "Such a gentleman."

Janeway: "Well, thank you very much for your hospitality, and now I really must be leaving you."
Sullivan: "And, er, drop in again before you leave town."
Janeway leaves quickly. Without looking back, she calls: "I will."
