SEAMUS DRISCOL : Page 2

After capturing Paris and Kim, Seamus has the townsfolk take them to St Mary's church, bind them, and draw a chalk line around them while Seamus chants an incantation from Biddy Ramsay's 'Faerie Magick'. She gave this book, which details how to resist faery magic, to Seamus before she died. Seamus holds aloft the book and proclaims the incantation, first in Latin: "Ex labis caelestium sanctorum super ad aures atrorum larvarum mentientium!" and then a translation: "From the lips of the heavenly saints above, to the ears of the dark spirits, may your spectral forms be cast back to the Other World!" When nothing happens, he repeats: "Back to the Other World!" Nothing in Biddy Ramsay's book works. Seamus uses Ramsay's silver spoon to induce a hypnotic trance on the Doctor, which is successfully induced only because the Doctor's holoprogram becomes integrated into Fair Haven's making him vulnerable. Questioning by Seamus and Sullivan elicits the fact that that the Doctor has not chosen a name for himself, and that the Other World is called Voyager. audio clip The former convinces Seamus that Ramsay's book is no use, since it says that if you can get a spirit to reveal its true name it renders you impervious to their powers. The latter statement prompts Sullivan to visit Voyager. The scene is depicted below:

In St Mary's, the townsfolk have bound Paris and Kim. Someone draws a boundary chalk line around them.

Meanwhile Seamus, holding aloft the book 'Faerie Magick' calls out an incantation, first in Latin: "Ex labis caelestium sanctorum super ad aures atrorum larvarum mentientium!", then he chants the translation: "From the lips of the heavenly saints above, to the ears of the dark spirits, may your spectral forms be cast back to the Other World!" People watch Paris and Kim intently. But nothing happens.

Seamus repeats: "Back to the Other World!" Still nothing happens. "There must be some trick to these incantations."

Milo shows Seamus Kim's and Paris' toolbox: "What do you make of this, Seamus?"
Seamus looks through it. Meanwhile, Kim whispers to Paris: "Maybe we should just tell them the truth!"
Paris whispers back: "Oh good idea, Harry. Want to tell them they're only holograms or should I?"

Seamus brandishes a PADD in front of them. "I see you left your box of charms at Sullivan's. I believe this is the talisman you used on Maggie?"

He addresses the angry townsfolk. "Maybe we should turn them into cows!"
The people roar their approval.

Paris: "Look, there's been a misunderstanding! We are not spirit folk."
Milo chuckles. "I think we've heard enough of your lies, Tommy boy. I say we tie them up to the lamp post in the square and show them how spirit folk were dealt with in the olden days."
Again the crowd shouts out approval.

Sullivan intervenes angrily. "Leave them alone. It's bad enough you've got them trussed up like Christmas turkeys. There's no need for foolish threats!"
Milo: "Better watch who's side you're on. You're not above suspicion yourself!"
Sullivan: "Oh, we're going to start turning on one another now, is that it!"
Milo: "We are, if you're after choosing them over your own people!"

The church doors open and the Doctor enters. He rebukes them all in a loud voice: "Sinners!" He approaches Paris and Kim. "Sinners, all of you. You have the audacity to turn a house of worship into a prison?! This is where we gather to pledge our love for our fellow man, not condemnation! You should all be ashamed of yourselves!"

But Seamus and the other townsfolk are unimpressed.

Seamus: "Quite a rousing sermon, Father. But I'm afraid you're not going to find too many takers tonight.
Milo: "Not after your little vanishing act. It seems Grace Declan saw you disappear into thin air on Sunday."
Seamus: "I'd say the town's a wee bit unholy! You're in league with them, aren't you!" One of Seamus' supporters slams the church door closed, shutting off that escape route. He orders the townsfolk: "Tie him up with the others!"
The Doctor protests as he is manhandled. He cannot contact Janeway to get himself transferred from the holodeck.

Seamus searches the Doctor and finds a strange object (a transport enhancer).
They discover a strange object on the Doctor's arm that they do not recognise. (It is his mobile emitter.)
Milo: "Look here, Seamus - another talisman."

Seamus: "Quick, get it off of him." Milo grabs it and the Doctor fritzes. They are stunned at the sight of him partly dematerialising and materialising again. If they were not certain before that he is one of the spirit folk, they are sure now!

Seamus finds the transport enhancers. "And what were you planning on doing with these?"
Kim: "Those are the devices that will allow us to leave. Just put them on our coats and we'll be on our way."
Milo: "You'd like us to believe that, wouldn't you."

Seamus: "Something tells me these are spirit charms. We pin them on you and God knows what powers you'll have."

Sullivan takes the mobile emitter from Milo and looks at it more closely. "This is no charm. It's some kind of machine."
Milo: "What does it matter? They won't be telling us the truth about any of it."
Seamus, consulting Biddy Ramsay's book: "Oh they'll tell us the truth alright. There's more than way to cut the wings off a pixie. We'll induce a trance." He asks Milo for and is handed Biddy Ramsay's silver spoon.

He starts to swing the silver spoon in front of the Doctor, telling him: "Keep your eyes on the silverware, Father."

As Seamus swings the watch, the Doctor tells him, fed up: "I hope you know this is blasphemous. Oh this is ridiculous. I can't be hypnotised." He sighs. But on Voyager's bridge, Chakotay is unable to isolate the Doctor's program, and Janeway realises that he has been integrated into the Fair Haven matrix and is thus vulnerable.

The Doctor has fallen into a trance!
Seamus to the Doctor: "Tell us the words. How do we banish the spirit folk to the other world?"
The Doctor speaks in a trance: "There is no other world, only Voyager."
Milo: "Voyager?"
Doctor: "Federation starship, Intrepid class, registry number NCC-74656."
Sullivan: "You're from some sort of vessel?"
The Doctor acknowledges: "Mm-hm."
Seamus: "He's talking gibberish."

Sullivan: "Maybe he's not." To Paris: "This ship of yours, is that where you took me?"
Seamus is consulting the 'Faerie Magyk' book. "Look here: it says if you can get a spirit to reveal his true name you'll render yourself impervious to his charms." None of the Fair Haven folk of course realise that the Doctor has no name.
Milo nods. He turns to the Doctor and demands: "What is your true name?"
Doctor: "I haven't decided on one yet."
Seamus realises that the book is useless and slams it shut.
When Paris refuses to confirm whether Katie O'Clare is on Voyager, Sullivan asks the Doctor.

Milo: "What are you doing, Sullivan?
Seamus: "No man who's ever gone to the other world has ever come back!"

Sullivan: "I have." He addresses the Doctor: "How do I get there?"
The Doctor looks up at him, then down at his closed hand. Sullivan opens his hand and looks at the mobile emitter.

When Sullivan returns to St Mary's Church, he brings Katie O'Clare i.e. Kathryn Janeway with him. She explains that she and the others are not faery folk and though they may seem to use magic it is not. She and Sullivan make the convincing argument that the townsfolk should resume their friendship with the out-of-towners.

Sullivan returns to St Mary's Church with Katie O'Clare (Janeway)

Seamus, next to Janeway, listens to Sullivan

When Sullivan says the Voyager crew's deeds were not malevolent, Seamus protests about Maggie being turned into a cow; Paris promises never to do it again

Seamus and the townsfolk agree with Janeway's/Sullivan's words: "Just because we're from different worlds, doesn't mean we can't care from each other." audio clip

Seamus and Paris go into Sullivan's for a drink together
Later, Seamus asks Paris: "I've been told there's a pot of gold somewhere in Glen Abbey. Would you be able to find it with one of those fancy machines of yours?" Paris tells him: "Just follow the rainbow, Seamus," and they go inside Sullivan's pub, no doubt to have a chat about it over a drink or two or three.
