MILO : Page 1

Milo, a resident of Fair Haven, is more superstitious and outspoken than most. He is a close friend of Seamus'.

When Seamus regales the people in Sullivan's pub about his seeing Paris "magically" repair a damaged wheel of his motor vehicle, he brings up the tale of Kilmanin in 1846: it is said that faery folk befriended the villagers, but strange things started happening until, come winter, the whole village vanished. Milo supports the tale, saying that after strangers appeared in Kilmanin: "The cows stopped giving milk! Potatoes grew rotten in the ground!" When Seamus says that then people started to go missing, Milo chimes in: "They were taken, to the Other World!" The scene is depicted below.

Michael Sullivan: "Now Seamus, you're not a great one for telling things the way they were."
Seamus: "I'll admit I've been known to add a little colour to stories from time to time to liven things up. But as God is my witness, I saw Tom Paris using unnatural powers to fix that wheel of his!"
Sullivan: "Tommy boy practising unholy magic. Next thing you'll be telling me is: you want to pay for your own drinks."
This gets a big laugh.
Seamus: "Make fun if you like, but he was heading up to Castle O'Dell only an hour before dark."
Doc Fitzgerald: "Oh leave it alone, Seamus. Can't one day go by without you making an arse of yourelf?"
Milo: "But that Tom Paris is an odd one, coming and going through town as if he built the place." He does not realise that in fact, Tom Paris did build the place, as Fair Haven is a holoprogram of Paris'.
Seamus: "That's right. And where does he go?"
Milo: "Oh, he's a shifty one. So, for that matter, are his friends."
Sullivan: "If you're talking about Katie O'Clare you'd better watch your tongue."
Seamus: "Oh, well you know what they say, Sullivan: 'Birds of a feather....'"
Sullivan: "They also say: 'Superstitution is the religion of fools'."
Seamus: "Kilmanin, 1846."
Sullivan: "What?"
Milo: "'Old Patsy' down at County Meath spoke of a band of spirit folk who came to Kilmanin in '46."
Sullivan: "Kilmanin. Did you ever hear of it, Doc?"
Doc Fitzgerald: "No, this is the first."
Milo: "You won't find it on any map, not any more."
Seamus: "It was a town not much different from Fair Haven, that is until this group of strangers arrived. The townsfolk welcomed them with open arms. After all, "a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet." But they regretted their hospitality soon enough."
Milo relishes the telling. "The cows stopped giving milk! Potatoes grew rotten in the ground!"
Seamus: "Then people started to go missing."
Doc Fitzgerald: "Oh go on."
Seamus: "It's true!"
Sullivan: "What happened to them?"
Milo: "They were taken, to the Other World!"
Seamus: "When winter came and the nights grew longer, the entire town vanished, every post, every nail, poof! into thin air, never to be seen again."

Doc Fitzgerald: "Are you suggesting that Fair Haven's going to go the way of Kilmanin just because we have a few new folks in town?"
Seamus: "I'm suggesting that you keep an eye on Tom Paris and his cohorts, not to mention that lady friend of yours."
Sullivan: "So Katie is some kind of goblin now, is that it?"
Seamus: "She's certainly cast a spell on you."
Milo: "Well, if you ask me-"
They stop as Kathryn Janeway, in her persona of Katie O'Clare, enters the pub.

Seamus persuades Milo to come with him to follow Tom Paris secretly that evening in order to watch him. Paris in turn is secretly following and watching Kim, who is on a date with Maggie O'Halloran.

Seamus and Milo watch Tom Paris

Harry Kim and Maggie O'Halloran; Tom Paris is secretly watching them from behind the hay cart

Milo: "What are we doing out here, Seamus, skulking about in the dark, spying on folks?"
Seamus: "What's the matter, Milo? Got a case of the willies?"
Milo: "Well, what if you're right. What if Tom Paris is some kind of demon? If we're caught, he'll cast a spell on us.
Seamus: "Then stop your squawking or he'll catch us for sure."
Paris, and Seamus and Milo, sneak up closer behind their respective quarries.
Meanwhile, oblivious of the attention, Kim and the pretty hologram Maggie O'Halloran are enjoying a romantic stroll. Kim is telling her about life as captain aboard his sea ship.
Milo sees Paris holding something (it is a PADD) and tells Seamus: "Look, he's got some sort of contraption in his hand. Maybe we're going about this the wrong way. We should go down to St Mary's and tell Father Mulligan the whole story."
Seamus: "He's not going to talk about the supernatural."
Milo: "Ah, if you'll fill his collection box he'll listen to anything."
Seamus: "True."

Milo's and Seamus' suspicions about Paris are confirmed when they witness Paris turn Maggie into a cow (he alters her holoprogram).

Paris and Kim leave Maggie and leave the holoprogram after being called back on duty. Next morning Milo and Seamus take Maggie the cow into St Mary's Church and try to persuade Father Mulligan (the Doctor) that it is really Maggie, but the Doctor disbelieves them and takes charge of the cow. The scene is depicted below:

In the middle of Father Mulligan's homily, the church doors suddenly open, and Milo and Seamus enter bringing Maggie the cow! Everyone turns at the interruption, as the cowbell rings, and are bemused by the sight. As Milo and Seamus bring the cow right up the aisle, one says: "Easy, Maggie." The other calls to the Doctor: "Father."
Doctor: "Did you make a wrong turn on your way to the milking shed?"

Seamus: "Oh it's not like that at all, Father! Something's terrible has happened!"
Doctor: "What now?"
Milo: "This was Maggie O'Halloran. The spirits have turned her into a cow."
"Maggie O'Halloran?" demands Grace, "eaten by a cow?"

Doctor: "Did you see these spirits?"
Seamus: "That we did: Tom Paris and Harry Kim!"

Doctor: "I hate to disappoint you, but it sounds as if you've been the victim of a practical joke. Tom Paris is a known prankster."
Milo: "Oh, it was unholy magic, I tell you. We saw it with our own eyes."
Doctor: "When did this alleged transformation take place?"
Seamus: "Last night."

Doctor: "Well, then. That settles it. This couldn't possibly be Maggie O'Halloran. I saw Maggie this morning on my way into church. She was at her cart tending her flowers. She's probably there now." The cow raises her head, moos loudly and strains at the restraining ropes, as if she is objecting to the Doctor's words. "Well, I think that's enough excitement for one morning." To the congregation: "This Mass is over. Go in peace." To Milo and Seamus: "Leave the cow."
Seamus: "Alright, Father. Excuse us, Maggie." They leave along with the rest of the congregation.

As soon as everybody has gone, the Doctor restores Maggie's original holographic visual form and transfers her back to her flower-stall in the main street, and she relates what she thinks is just a strange dream to Milo and Seamus. She dreamt that she was wandering around town wearing nothing but a bell and wound up in church, where everyone stared at her, and Milo and Seamus were there too.

Maggie relates her strange "dream" to Seamus (on her right) and Milo

After Sullivan warns the townsfolk that Paris and Kim intend to visit Sullivan's pub that night to somehow alter the Fair Haven inhabitants, Seamus leads the people in a quest to rid Fair Haven of spirit folk such as Tom Paris, Harry Kim and the Doctor. He is strongly supported by Milo. When Sullivan protests about the use of rifles, Milo replies: "You'd be surprised how many things a bullet will stop." Sullivan points out: "We don't know much about anything, do we. I mean, we've got Milo here, acting like a holy war's been declared."

in St. Mary's Church where a number of townsfolk are gathered,
Milo supports Seamus as he plans action against the spirit folk
Seamus: "And we've got red twine to stop them from changing shape."
Several townswomen are preparing these weapons.
Milo: "And don't forget about the ash berries."
Seamus: "Ash berries. Right. That's how you stop them (spirit folk) from using their powers against you."
