Holocharacters

MAGGIE O'HALLORAN

Young, attractive holographic woman in the Fair Haven holoprogram. She has a flower-cart which she has in various places in the town's main street, from which she sells flowers. She and Kim feel a mutual romantic attraction. In [Fair Haven], Paris tries to warn Kim off by telling him that she is promised to "a pig-farmer with a very large rake". The pig-farmer's name is revealed in [Spirit Folk] to be Ray Ewan.

Maggie smiles at Kim

Maggie has a sister, whom Paris claims has "wooden teeth", again to discourage Kim's possible interest in her.

After USS Voyager is pounded by a class 9 neutronic wavefront, the ship escapes by routing power from all possible systems, including holodecks, to the main deflector to cut a way through the storm. Fair Haven has been accessible on a 24-hour "open door" policy and so is currently running at that time. But with Voyager's very survival in peril, they do not have time to go through the holodeck shut-down sequence and so have to shut it down immediately. After Voyager is past the neutronic wavefront, Paris and Kim enter the holoprogram to assess the damage. They discover approximately 90% of the Fair Haven program to be damaged or lost. Kim, asking Paris what should be saved, pointedly mentions Maggie O'Halloran.

In [Spirit Folk], Kim replicates a bouquet of Broadway lilies for her (which means they are real and not holographic). He enters Fair Haven and, after chatting in the pub with Maggie for a while, they take a romantic moonlit walk along the cobbled main street.

Paris is secretly following Kim and Maggie. Seamus and Milo are secretly following Paris..
Meanwhile, unaware of the attention, Kim and Maggie O'Halloran are enjoying their romantic stroll. Kim is telling her about his life aboard his sea ship: "A captain's only as good as his crew." The Starfleet ensign has told her he is the captain!
Maggie: "It must be lonely out there on the sea with only the stars to guide you."
Kim: "Sometimes, during the night watch, with timbers creaking and the dark water stretching out as far as the eye can see, you can believe you're the only man in the world."

Maggie: "Maybe you should think about settling down on dry land."
Kim: "Well, believe me, I do, as often as I think of you."

Maggie: "May I ask you something, Harry?"
Kim: "Of course."
Maggie: "Would you like to hold my hand?"
Kim: "If you promise to hold mine back." and reaches for her hand.

Milo spots that Paris has a "contraption" in his hand (it is a PADD).
Kim: "I thought you were promised to Ray Ewan?"
Maggie: "Not any more." They are both pleased. "Can I ask you something else, Harry?"
Kim: "Please."
Maggie: "Would you like to kiss me?"
Kim: "Is that a trick question?"
She presents herself for his kiss and he leans in for it.
Paris presses a control on his "contraption", and Maggie turns into a cow! Kim jumps back, startled and horrified.

Milo and Seamus can hardly believe their eyes!

Maggie as a cow

Paris laughs at Kim's surprise. Hearing him, Kim turns toward him, furious. "Tom! Don't you have anything better to do?!"
Paris: "Boy, she really turned on you!"
Kim is not impressed by the practical joke, nor by Paris' pun: "Ha, ha, very funny. I could've got trampled."
Paris: "Relax! The holodeck safeties are on. There's nothing to worry about."
Kim: "Alright, alright. You've had your fun. Now change her back."
But they are interrupted as the com. signal sounds. audio: comms. signalcomms. signal "Chakotay to Paris and Kim. Report to the bridge."
Paris, via comms: "On our way." Contact ends.
Kim: "What about Maggie?!"
Paris, still amused: "Oh, she'll be fine. Let her graze!"
Kim reluctantly has to leave with Paris.

The prank is witnessed by Seamus and Milo. When Paris and Kim leave, leaving Maggie, Seamus and Milo take charge of her. Next morning they take Maggie the cow into St Mary's Church, but the Doctor does not believe their tale and tells them to leave the cow with him.

He restores her original holographic visual parameters and transfers her holoprogram back to her flower-cart in the main street. There Milo and Seamus happen upon her and she confides in them. Their conversation is given below:

Maggie: "Well, I must admit, I'm not feeling quite myself today." They help her sit down.
Milo: "Oh?"
Maggie: "Well, this is going to sound very odd, but I feel like I just woke up from the strangest dream, and I don't remember going to sleep!"
Milo: "You're right. That does sound odd."
Seamus: "Do you remember anything about last night?"
Maggie: "Well, I was out with Harry Kim. He chatted me up at The Ox & Lamb, and we were off on a walk before I knew it."
Milo: "What did you do on your walk?"
Maggie is indignant at what she thinks is an improper implication. "We talked! What kind of a girl do you think I am?!"
Seamus: "Now, Maggie, we weren't implying anything."
Milo agrees with him: "No!"
Seamus: "Do you recall anything else about the evening?"
Milo: "Did anything out of the ordinary happen, anything at all?"
Maggie: "I don't remember!"
Seamus: "Well, tell us about the dream, then."
Maggie: "Oh. It was most unpleasant. I was walking around town with nothing but a bell around my neck. Somehow I wound up in church. Everyone was staring at me. You were there, Seamus, and you too, Milo. The next thing I was tending my flowers just as you boys walked up."

Seamus: "Well, that's quite a story, Maggie."

Maggie: "Well, I was out with Harry Kim." She smiles at the fond memory of the stroll with her beau.

Grace Declan (left) and Maggie
In the pub afterwards, when numerous gathered villagers discuss the strange goings-on and the apparent arrival amongst them of spirit folk (Paris, Kim, Katie O'Clare, Father Mulligan etc.), Maggie says: "Well, what about that Neelix fellow who runs The Ox & Lamb? Well, if he doesn't look like a leprechaun, I don't know who does!" audio clip

Maggie joins the townsfolk in following Seamus in his attempt to rid Fair Haven of the spirit folk and is present in St. Mary's Church when Seamus tries to drive the captured spirit folk Paris, Kim and Father Mulligan (the Doctor) back to the Other World. She is still in the church when Sullivan returns from the Other World (actually USS Voyager), bringing Katie O'Clare (Janeway) with him. When Sullivan tells the gathered people that the Voyager folk's deeds: "These are not the deeds of spirits and mischief-makers." Seamus protests that they turned Maggie into a cow. Paris promises never to do it again.

Seamus: "Well, they turned Maggie into a cow!"
Paris says quickly: "But that'll never happen again, I swear."

Sullivan and Janeway persuade the Fair Haven residents that the Voyager crewmembers are not spirit folk and have technology which is not magic. Maggie joins the townsfolk in agreeing to renew their friendships.

Later Kim talks to her about it and she, who is still taken with him, replies: "Well, I suppose I can forgive and forget. It's not often you meet a handsome man from outer space." and she puts a flower in his buttonhole. audio clip He stays to talk with her as Paris, Seamus and Milo head for Sullivan's pub. We do not know whether Kim joins them in the pub or if he joins them promptly, or whether in fact he stays for a long time with Maggie and how far their friendship deepens.
