LIAM
| In [Fair Haven], Harry Kim ruins Liam's standing as an arm-wrestling champion, undefeated for three years in four counties. The match takes place in Sullivan's pub. Seamus bets three shillings on Liam. The Doctor places a bet of five shillings on Liam and then, upon Paris' protest that he will hurt Kim's feelings, two shillings on Kim. | |
 | The Doctor goes over to the table where Kim and Liam are ready to begin the arm-wrestling contest. "Gentlemen!" He raps a glass three times on the table as the signal to begin.
The sound of the excited crowd is deafening as they shout support for their man. The Doctor joins in, calling out: "Go on, Mr Kim, show him what for!" |
 | During the arm-wrestling contest, Janeway enters and wanders over to the bar where Michael Sullivan, the bar-keep, has just served some drinks. |
 | Janeway enters and asks the bartender (Michael Sullivan if he has seen Tom Paris. Sullivan tells her he is "right over there, with young Harry". She watches the proceedings with interest.
"Poor sod." Sullivan is referring to Kim. "I'm afraid no one's whipped Liam in three years."
Janeway: "There's a first time for everything."
Sullivan: "An optimist, are you?"
Janeway: "A realist."
He smiles. |
Liam forces Kim's arm right over until it touches the table....almost! But then Kim summons up extra strength and, shouting with the effort, forces Liam's arm over.....and wins! He is thrilled!
Seamus to Liam: "Come on, my boy, push, push!" | Doctor: "Try! Try!" Kim: "I'm trying!" Doctor: "Come on, try harder!" |
Seamus to Liam: "You've got him, you've got him." Doctor to Kim: "You're losing!" | Kim starts to turn the tide. |
Seamus: "What in God's name...? Come on, Liam, push!" | Victorious Kim: "Yes! Yes!" |
When Liam loses, Seamus pounds him on the back for losing him the three shillings he had bet.
After Michael Sullivan's program is called up by Kim and Paris in Voyager's holographic research lab, Sullivan plays along with them in the hope that they will return him to Fair Haven unharmed, and part of his pretence is that he tells Kim that Liam is anxious for a re-match.
the villagers' smiles show their willingness to be friends again with those they once thought to be spirit folk | Sullivan vanishes from Fair Haven to the Other World, actually USS Voyager, but soon afterwards returns bringing Katie O'Clare (Janeway) with him. Janeway and Sullivan persuade the townsfolk that she and the other Voyager folk are not spirit folk and do not use magic. Janeway tells people: "And we're not spirit folk. Some of our technology may seem like magic, but I assure you it's not. If you want, we'll leave and never bother you again. But we'd prefer to find some way to keep our friendship alive." It looks as if the arm-wrestling re-match between Liam and Harry Kim will be on! |
