hours later, Sullivan addresses the townsfolk in the church | In [Spirit Folk], there is a discussion in Sullivan's pub following Maggie's temporary transformation into a cow, when Milo and Seamus discuss their suspicions with a number of townsfolk there. Edith contributes to the fear that Paris, Kim, Katie O'Clare (Kathryn Janeway) and the others are spirit folk with evil intentions towards Fair Haven: she recounts a magical rescue effected by Katie. The conversation goes as follows:
Milo: "So I said to young Harry, I'm not one for rainy days and grey skies. As soon as the words were out of my mouth, he called up the spirits to do his bidding. A second later there wasn't a cloud in the sky!"
Edith: "I was up at Ballahick Farm with Mary. (Mary is her daughter.) She was playing near the well. Somehow she lost her footing and fell in. I was so frightened I didn't know what to do. So I ran to the Colby's to get some help. But when we returned, there was Mary in the meadow, talking with Katie O'Clare. There wasn't a scratch on her! Katie said I must've been mistaken when I saw her fall." She looks at them gravely. "It was no mistake."
Grace: "I saw something strange too, only I hesitated to say anything for fear you'd think me mad. But after listening to your stories today, I feel you've a right to know."
Milo: "Well, speak up."
Grace: "Last Sunday, after his sermon, I saw Father Mulligan vanish into thin air."
There are gasps at this.
Seamus: "Aye, he's one of them, right enough. Father Mulligan, Tommy boy, Katie and the rest - they're spirit folk!"
Maggie: "Well, what about that Neelix fellow who runs The Ox & Lamb? Well, if he doesn't look like a leprechaun, I don't know who does!"
Seamus: "They're all probably up at Castle O'Dell conspiring against us!"
Edith does not seem to be present in St Mary's Church when the townsfolk try to drive out the captured spirit folk Paris, Kim and Father Mulligan (the Doctor). She does not seem to be in the church when Sullivan and Katie O'Clare (Janeway) address the townsfolk. (It is possible she was one of the holocharacters mostly frozen in Sullivan's pub when Paris orders: "Computer, freeze program." but this happens to Grace Declan and she recovers.) But Sullivan mentions Edith. He tells his fellow-villagers: "They have machines that I can't begin to describe, but not once have they used them against us. Quite the opposite, in fact. Milo, you said you didn't like the rain and young Harry Kim made it go away. Edith Mulchaey herself said that Katie pulled her daughter from the well and out of harm's way. These are not the deeds of spirits and mischief-makers." His words and words by Janeway bring peace and the renewal of friendship between the people of Fair Haven and the Voyager crew.
It is possible that Tom Paris named the holocharacter after Voyager's Ensign Mulchaey, who features briefly in [#96 Drone] and is mentioned briefly by Neelix in [#162 Workforce, Part One]. |
