In [#154 Nightingale], the Delta Flyer answers a distress call from a Kraylor ship.
Reluctant to get involved in a battle between two races, Kim, in command of the Delta Flyer, attempts to help the Kraylor by contacting their enemy, the Annari hoping that diplomacy will end the hostility. When he fails to persuade the Annari ship's captain to disengage, Kim uses the Delta Flyer's deflector to emit a pulse to damage the Annari ship, forcing them to retreat. Kim: "Neelix, set our deflector beam for a narrow pulse. Seven, let me know the second their weapons are raised fully charged. I might be able to trigger an overload."
Kim and Neelix beam to the Kraylor ship and learn that its captain was killed along with all the ship's officers. Impressed with Kim's skills, Loken, the doctor in charge of the research team, asks him to take command, since no one left among them is trained to command a vessel. Kim declines, but Loken insists that they cannot afford to fail in their mission to deliver vaccines to their homeworld and save thousands of lives. Since their flight plan will take them close to Voyager Kim agrees to command the ship that far, and he orders Seven to dock the Delta Flyer in the Kraylor ship's shuttlebay for the journey. As they approach Voyager's co-ordinates, Kim discovers three Annari warships in orbit. Still planet-bound, Janeway has set up trade negotiations with the Annari. Once the Annari leave the orbit, Kim brings Loken to Voyager where he appeals to Janeway for help in getting home. In private, Kim presses the case on behalf of the Kraylor, offering to take charge of the mission himself. Janeway agrees. It turns out that the Kraylor have deceived Kim and there are no vaccines to deliver, but nevertheless Kim continues his mission and returns the Kraylor survivors safely to their homeworld.
