In [#153 Body And Soul], the Delta Flyer and its crew are captured by the Lokirrim. The Doctor, Seven, and Kim are in the Delta Flyer collecting spores from the tails of comets for the Doctor to use in synthesising new medicines. Suddenly they come under attack by a Lokirrim patrol ship for transporting a "photonic insurgent" through Lokirrim space. The Delta Flyer's thrusters, shields, and subspace communications go offline as the result of the attack. The Delta Flyer is equipped with pulse-phased weapons and a duranium-enforced hull. The patrol vessel's captain, called Ranek, fires a disruption field that starts to decompile the Doctor's matrix. The Delta Flyer is boarded.
Inspecting the vessel, Ranek notes that the biogenic material aboard the Delta Flyer could be used to create viral weapons and he arrests the crew because transporting photonics and manufacturing biogenic weapons in Lokirrim space are serious charges.
He also finds the Doctor's mobile emitter, which Seven pretends is her "portable regeneration unit". Ranek confiscates the Delta Flyer, placing it in his own ship's docking bay, and locks the Delta Flyer crew in a holding cell. There Kim discovers that the Doctor's program has been safely and fully downloaded into Seven's cybernetic implants, and is now in control of her body, so that for the first time the Doctor is able to experience corporeality and have sensory experiences including touch and smell. While the Doctor is in Seven of Nine's body, her consciousness is submerged, but physiologically she is fine.
Ranek has Seven brought to the Delta Flyer for questioning, unaware that the Doctor is still inhabiting her body.
Ranek interrogates Seven. He notes that the Delta Flyer has: "Pulse-phased weapons, duranium-enforced hull.... Much more sophisticated than the typical smugglers' vessel." Seven protests: "...we are not smugglers or terrorists, we are explorers. Let us contact our ship. Our Captain will explain everything." Ranek ignores her and demands that Seven/the Doctor explain a piece of equipment. It is the food replicator and they end up indulging in a feast of food and wine which they order from it. Mellowed by the food, drink and companionship, Ranek agrees to hand over Seven's "portable regeneration unit" in exchange for medical services, then returns Seven/the Doctor to the holding cell.
In the holding cell the Doctor's matrix is restored into the mobile emitter. The disoriented Seven then scolds the Doctor for abusing her body, but before long tactical officer Jaryn takes the Doctor (once more "disguised" by being downloaded into her cybernetic implants) to treat their soldiers. Meanwhile Voyager comes under attack by a Lokirrim vessel because it senses photonic activity aboard. Janeway agrees to shut down the holodecks and allow the Lokirrim ship to escort Voyager through their territory.
Voyager escapes the Lokirrim escort, locate Ranek's ship and demands the return of the away team. When Ranek refuses, Chakotay uses Ranek's command codes to disable the shields of Ranek's ship. Ranek makes an attempt to sabotage his ship rather than return the captives, but is critically injured when the Doctor and Seven thwart his plan and in doing so reveal the Doctor's guise. The Doctor saves Ranek, obliging Ranek to express their gratitude to a photonic.
