In [#128 One Small Step], the Delta Flyer is sent to salvage an old Earth space module trapped within a graviton ellipse.
Voyager narrowly escapes being encompassed by an as yet unidentified mass of subspace energy which is attracted to objects that emit electromagnetic energy. The phenomenon turns out to be a graviton ellipse which travels through subspace. The Delta Flyer's shields are modified, and it is despatched to salvage the Ares IV module of 2032 believed to be trapped within the energy field of the graviton ellipse. The Delta Flyer finally enters the mass of energy, but not before encountering excessive turbulence. The Delta Flyer crew comprises Chakotay, Seven and Paris.

They have approximately five hours before the energy ball heads to another subspace. Back on Voyager, Torres discovers that a dark matter asteroid is heading straight for the graviton ellipse, so that there are now only minutes to spare. Janeway immediately instructs the Delta Flyer to break out but Chakotay disobeys her orders and the Delta Flyer becomes trapped within the ellipse. Chakotay goes against Janeway's orders and decides to try to bring the Ares IV module back with them. The Delta Flyer locks onto the module with a tractor beam (pictured), but the weight of the Ares IV inhibits their swift escape, and the Delta Flyer is unable to make it out in time without being affected by the impact of the dark matter asteroid with the graviton ellipse. The Delta Flyer is badly damaged: engines are down, shields are offline, auxiliary life support is damaged, and the secondary relays are also offline.

Voyager is able to re-establish contact with the Delta Flyer. After discussion, it is decided the only hope is to beam Seven over to the Ares IV to salvage its ion distributor in order to supply power for the Delta Flyer. Seven returns to the Delta Flyer with the ion distributor and also the body of Lt. John Mark Kelly, its long-dead pilot. With the ion distributor installed in the Delta Flyer, power comes online.

The Delta Flyer escapes the graviton ellipse moments before it retreats into subspace. The Delta Flyer is taken close to Voyager and rescued by Voyager's tractor beam.
