DELTA FLYER MISSIONS

This page covers 'INTRODUCTION [#96 Drone]' and '[#97 Extreme Risk]'.

INTRODUCTION: In early 2375, in [#96 Drone], Seven suggests designing a new shuttlecraft.

While Paris, Torres, Seven and the Doctor are on an astrological survey in a class-2 shuttlecraft and Paris and Torres complain about the poor design of the class-2 shuttle, Seven suggests designing a new one, which Torres believes to be a good idea. This paves the way for the construction and launch of the Delta Flyer in the next episode [#97 Extreme Risk]. Between [#96 Drone] and [#97 Extreme Risk] Paris draws up a design for a new shuttlecraft and shares at least some of his ideas with Kim, as inferred from dialogue in [#97 Extreme Risk].

In [#97 Extreme Risk], the Delta Flyer is built and goes on its first mission.

Janeway orders that Voyager's new multispatial probe (pictured) be remotely steered into a gas giant to try and prevent a Malon ship from stealing it. Despite the danger, the Malon ship enters the gas giant and implodes. Knowing Voyager cannot risk entering the gas giant, Paris shares his design for a new technologically advanced shuttlecraft, named the Delta Flyer, believing that the new shuttle would be able to withstand the gas giant's atmosphere. Janeway gives him permission to work with the rest of the crew to build it.

Paris' preliminary design for the Delta Flyer includes ultra-aerodynamic contours, retractable nacelles, parametallic hull plating, and unimatrix shielding (based on Tuvok's design for the multispatial probe), and a Borg-inspired weapons system including photonic missiles. Kim suggests using isomagnetic EPS conduits in the plasma manifold to maximize power distribution. Torres designs a hull with titanium alloys, though Seven suggests tetraburnium alloys instead.

Paris: "Computer, add dynametric tailfins to the nacelles."
Tuvok: "Computer, delete dynametric tailfins."
Paris: "What d'you do that for?"
Tuvok: "We are not designing a hot-rod, Lieutenant."
Paris: "That is exactly what we're designing: a 24th century warp-powered, ultra-responsive hot-rod."
Tuvok: "Your embellishments are purely decorative. They serve no practical purpose."
Paris: "No, I beg to differ. If we make this thing look mean enough, other ships are going to think twice before taking us on."

Seven: "I suggest we return our attention to the matter of structural integrity."
Tuvok: "Agreed."
Seven: "Lt. Torres' hull design is flawed. We should be using tetraburnium alloys instead of titanium."

Torres runs a simulation of the Delta Flyer in flight in order to assess the hull microfracture problem

Kim later suggests reinforcing the hull with kellinite, though Tuvok claims the idea is flawed. Paris designs a panel with knobs and levers like those in his Captain Proton holoprogram.

Another Malon ship arrives, commanded by Vrelk, who tells Janeway his ship is going to retrieve the probe. Seven spies on the interior of the Malon vessel and discovers they are building a shuttle of their own that can also withstand the atmosphere. Janeway orders construction work on the Delta Flyer to be speeded up.

The Malon launch their shuttle, and the Delta Flyer is forced to launch early, before a fatal flaw that causes microfractures can be solved.

The Delta Flyer's torpedo scores a direct hit on the Malon shuttle, forcing them to retreat. But once Kim locks on a tractor beam to the probe, the Delta Flyer begins to lose structural integrity. Just in time before the hull breaches, Torres quickly constructs an ad hoc device, which incorporates an EPS relay from the Delta Flyer's transporter circuitry, to generate a containment field.

The Delta Flyer returns to Voyager safely, with the multispatial probe.
