Voyager visits the trading station known as Abaddon's Repository of Lost Treasures. The crew has some spare duranium sheeting in cargo bay 1 that, with a few modifications, could be converted into gravity plating. They intend to trade this with Abaddon for fifteen power regulators in good condition and three more they could salvage with a little work. The list also includes some ion exchange rods though Seven has some doubts about them. Chakotay notes that energy is not in abundance at the moment, but he hopes they can replenish their power reserve in the next few weeks. Cargo bay 2 has thirty metres of EPS conduit, a broadband sensor matrix, and a tactical data module stored as emergency supplies. Paris persuades Chakotay to exchange three used power cells and Paris' jukebox for the secondhand ship he later christens Alice.
Paris starts restoring Alice. Alice has a neurogenic interface, allowing it to interact directly with the pilot's thoughts. When Paris leaves after a brief trial of the interfacing technology, Alice powers on by herself and scans his brain imprint. Driven by Alice's seductive power Paris works non-stop to restore Alice. He now wears the flight suit design of her last pilot. Alice, whom he now imagines as a flesh-and-blood woman, convinces him to use the neurogenic interface again and to steal power cells from Voyager (pictured).
When Alice tries to kill Torres who has become suspicious, Alice forces Paris to launch Alice and complete the interface, making him one with the machine. Too late Janeway and the crew realise what is happening, as Paris/Alice fire on Voyager and escape into warp.
The Voyager crew obtain information from Abaddon, her last pilot. Alice was looking for a top biological entity with which to work together in tandem, to guide her to an unknown point in space. They discover Alice is forcing Paris to take her to an anomaly known as a particle fountain and set course in pursuit.
Tuvok works to access Alice's main computer and transmit a shutdown sequence. Torres taps into the neurogenic interface using a communication signal. With the voices of both Torres and Alice in his head, Paris cannot think properly. Just as he is about to suffer a cerebral haemorrhage, Tuvok succeeds in shutting down Alice. Paris is beamed safely to sickbay, and Alice is destroyed in the particle fountain.

Chakotay says they have a full complement of shuttles in addition to the Delta Flyer. This means that shuttlecraft known to have been lost in previous episodes, e.g. [#107 Gravity], have been replaced.
Alice uses an optronic pulse to disrupt Voyager's tractor beam.
The Federation has lost more than a dozen ships to a particle fountain in the Alpha Quadrant. No detail is given so it is not known how many, if any, were Starfleet vessels.
