PART 1
The new astrometrics lab is completed (upgrade begun in [#72 Revulsion]) and inaugurated, with astrometric sensors to measure the radiative flux of up to three billion stars simultaneously. The computer uses that information to calculate the ship's position relative to the centre of the galaxy using mapping technology ten times more accurate than they have been using before. Kim and Seven have plotted a new course home that will eliminate five years from the journey.
Paris bases his idea for transverse bulkheads on the design of the ill-fated S.S. Titanic. Emergency forcefields are set up between all decks and every section so that, in the event of a cataclysmic breach, most of the crew will be protected.
The temporal variance of the chroniton torpedo is 1.47 microseconds. This accords with [#63 Before and After]. The variance is used to create temporal shielding for Voyager. Not only do the crew have to match shields to the temporal variance, but they must also match the deflector array to the inverse of that variance for the shielding to be effective.
![]() | Voyager is attacked by the Krenim; fire cannot be returned because weapons are down, and Tuvok also reports that his attempt to modify Voyager's shielding was unsuccessful. |
On day 47 of the Year Of Hell, the turbolift system goes down. See DAMAGE REPORT.
Tuvok and Seven work to develop temporal shielding. They must not only match the ship's shields to the temporal variance of the chronoton torpedoes (1.47) but "must also match the deflector array to the inverse of that variance." The modifications are ready now but there is no time to test them - the modified shields are successfully tested in combat against another Krenim attack.

The tactical station has a tactile interface installed so that blind Tuvok can use it.
The phaser banks are burned out.
PART 2
Crippled, Voyager takes refuge in a class-9 nebula while repairs are undertaken, venturing out to forge alliances with the Nihydron and Mawasi then, with ships of those species, seeking out Annorax's weapon ship.
PART 1
Escape pods are equipped with subspace beacons.
They are down to eleven torpedoes, but torpedo launchers are offline, forcing them to lay out four torpedoes like mines. To see a picture sequence of torpedoes being laid like mines from the aft torpedo launchers, beam here.
PART 2
The Doctor has repaired the optronic error in his program. It was this problem that took him offline for several months during the timeline experienced by Kes in [#63 Before and After].
PART 1
Annorax's temporal weapon, apart from erasing elements from history such as an entire species, also produces a kind of space-time shockwave that destabilises Voyager's warp field.

an explosion rips through deck 5, killing crewmembers Emmanuel and Strickler, and destroying Sections 10 to 53 on Deck 5
The entire turbolift system becomes non-operational on day 47 of the Year Of Hell. Kim and Torres (who is injured) get trapped in a turbolift for about 6 hours. Torres is injured. Seven arrives, forces open the turbolift doors manually, and explains that the entire turbolift system is non-functional after 19 main power relays were damaged in a Krenim attack. Torres wants to check the Jefferies tube network on Deck 11 since she believes that the EPS manifold might have been hit. Footage of the turbolift car in the turbolift shaft is from [TNG: The Disaster].

Later that day, an explosion rips through a Jefferies tube crawlway when a chroniton torpedo lodged partly in it explodes. Tuvok is blinded, but Seven has managed to isolate the torpedo's temporal variance which later enables Voyager to develop temporal shielding.

On day 65 of the Year Of Hell, Janeway records in her log: "Captain's log, stardate 51268.4. This morning's attack destroyed the power grid on Deck 11. No casualties this time but the replicator system was badly damaged. We've gone to emergency rations. As a result the situation has gotten a little worse. Environmental controls continue to fail. Seven decks have been rendered uninhabitable and we've had to relocate the crew. Quarters are close, nerves are frayed, and I'm not sure what's more difficult to maintain, Voyager's systems or the crew's morale. ..."

bridge damage, day 65
On day 70 of the Year Of Hell Annorax's weapon weakens Voyager's temporal shields and starts pushing Voyager out of the space-time continuum, trying to erase Voyager from history. Scans of Annorax's propulsion system indicate that his vessel's mass prevents him from exceeding warp 6. Accordingly Janeway orders all hands to clear Voyager's outer sections and prepare for wide-scale breaches. Voyager then engages warp 7 but as its structural integrity is still impaired the damage is extreme - parts of the hull are ripped off, causing massive damage. On day 73, Janeway informs the crew: "We've lost nine decks. More than half the ship has been destroyed. Life support is nearly gone. Voyager can no longer sustain its crew." and she gives the order for all but senior staff to leave in escape pods. The astrometrics lab is also offline.
PART 2
Due to the damage there, deflector control is designated a level-4 hazard.
One warp nacelle is offline, and the other is a lost cause. The power grid is operating at 32 percent efficiency.
With Voyager barely holding together and about to be destroyed, Janeway steers a collision course with Annorax's ship. The impact destabilises its temporal core, changing history. The Year of Hell becomes an unrealised timeline so that all damage to Voyager (and crew casualties) never occurred as, in the new timeline, Voyager never enters Krenim space.

with a hole ripped in deck 1, Janeway decides on a collision course
PART 2
Under Starfleet Medical Regulation 121 Section A, the Doctor, as the ship's chief medical officer, can relieve Janeway of her active command. Her failure to adhere to his order is a court-martial offence. As the Year Of Hell eventually never occurs, the Doctor never actually relieved her of duty.
