A cloaked ship suddenly appears with an injured female on board who hails Voyager, and specifically Chakotay by name. Once the woman, Kellin, is beamed to sickbay, she asks the captain for asylum from her people. When Chakotay asks how she knows him, she explains that she was recently on Voyager for several weeks. No one remembers her because memories of her people cannot be held in the minds of others for more than a few hours. She has returned to Voyager because she fell in love with Chakotay. She is from Ramura, a closed society that tracks down and returns people who leave their world. She was on Voyager about a month ago when her job as tracer (like a bounty-hunter) led her to a stowaway on the ship. Although Kellin says a computer virus was planted to erase all evidence of her presence, the crew is still ordered to look through navigation logs and other outlets that would corroborate her story. Ramuran ships locate Voyager and open fire. Janeway gives Kellin permission to modify the ship's sensors so they can see the cloaked ships. Once Voyager returns fire, the Ramurans flee, leaving behind Kellin, who asks to stay on the ship permanently, but she realises that she will continue to be pursued and thus she is placing Voyager in danger. She works with Seven and Kim on a defence strategy against her people, but then senses that a tracer is on board. He suddenly materialises, and despite her protest, the Ramuran shoots her with the neurolytic emitter, a device that erases the memory. Eventually she decides to leave Voyager and return to her people.
Voyager was orbiting the planet Mikah before Kellin boarded the ship looking for the stowaway she was following.
The crew has been collecting deuterium through the Bussard collectors. Seven has suggested a series of modifications that have increased the Bussard collectors's efficiency 23 per cent.
When Voyager's sensors are unable to pick up the Ramuran ships, Janeway has Seven use the astrometrics sensors to scan for them. Seven detects the close-range weapons fire of two ships in battle. Later, Kellin helps to alter Voyager's scanners so they can detect the Ramuran vessels.
A magneton sweep of the transporter room disrupted the stowaway's polarisation cloak, allowing him to be captured by Kellin during her first visit to Voyager.
According to Kim, Beta Team is the best security squad on the ship. This indicates that security team designations use the Greek alphabet, presumably starting at alpha.
A command officer is required to override the security lockouts on astrometric processors. The processors are located in a Jefferies tube on Deck 10.
On two occasions a virus is introduced to erase all mention of the Ramurans' presence from Voyager's computer.
Ramurans are impervious to scanning devices, including Voyager's, due to the technology they developed to aid their clandestine lifestyle.
Propulsion is knocked offline during the Ramuran attack, leaving only thrusters available.
