STATUS REPORT

Two members of the engineering crew are off sick, forcing Torres to cancel the fuel cell overhaul.

There is a rupture in the coolant injector. Ensign Vorik suggests reconfiguring the coolant assembly to give them greater control over the pressure valve emissions.

The crew attempt to create a transwarp conduit. See under DAMAGE REPORT.

EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

At the start of her day, the acoustic invertor in Torres' sonic shower blew out, which Paris comments will "make your hair stand on end".

Neelix says they can spare several hundred kilograms of food for the Caatati.

Torres and Paris interplex the com systems in both environmental suits in order to create a phase carrier wave to contact Voyager. Voyager reads the signature and knows it is from them. Oxygen in the space suits is measured in millibars. This version of environmental suits are first seen in Star Trek in [Star Trek VIII: First Contact]. They are first seen in [Voyager] in this episode (the exact same costumes were used), and are seen in several later episodes.

SHUTTLECRAFT

The Caatati send an antimatter pulse back through the shuttlecraft Cochrane's particle beam, compromising the structural integrity field, forcing Torres and Paris to abandon ship, and ultimately destroying the ship.

DAMAGE REPORT

The crew attempt to create a transwarp conduit for only a short time to get as much sensor data as they can. First they set up a temporary tachyon matrix within the main deflector. Since they need to be at warp speed to create a large enough subspace field, Torres has helm control rerouted to engineering. At warp 2.3 they start emitting tachyons and energising the matrix. When there is no indication of a subspace field they change to a higher energy band. The field forms, but tachyon particles leak into the propulsion system. They are able to shut down the deflector and cut all power relays but the leak continues flooding the warp core with tachyons to the point where it may breach. Torres evacuates engineering and tries decoupling the dilithium matrix but to no effect. She uses authorisation Torres Omega Phi-93 to eject the warp core. The ship is stopped dead with the warp core millions of kilometres away. The impulse engines are seriously damaged, and only a few thrusters are available. Tractoring the warp core while it is unstable could cause an antimatter explosion. Later Janeway and Seven determine that the accident occurred because the core pressure increased when tachyon levels rose to a resonant frequency.

As First Officer and hence the officer in charge of personnel, Chakotay prepares the duty rosters. This accords with what was established in [TNG].
