STATUS REPORT

Neutrino scans are used to locate the wormhole. Voyager launches a high resolution reconnaissance probe to gather information about the dress and appearance of the planet's population.

A lot can be deduced about Voyager's scanning and other in-built ship's equipment from this episode. Based on the residual neutrino levels, the crew is able to estimate that the wormhole last appeared at least six months prior to their arrival. The dispersal pattern of the interstellar plasma shows that it is not fixed on this end, but rather seems to be travelling through space. Running a phase profile of the wormhole's neutrino emissions confirms that it leads to the Alpha Quadrant. They detect a subspace instability at their current location that is a result of the wormhole's last appearance there. Bombarding the area of the subspace instability with verteron particles returns the wormhole to their location. Later, in pursuit of the escaping Ferengi, the gravitational effects of the wormhole refract Voyager's tractor beam, making it impossible for Voyager to get a lock. The transporter targeting scanners are also out of phase, so they try setting the scanners to a narrow band subspace frequency.

EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

The action of Federation transporters can be blocked. The Ferengi reconfigure their matter-antimatter generator to produce an ionic disruption field around the temple square so that they cannot be beamed out again. Chakotay destroys the dampening field by firing a phaser at the generator. (Actual devices called transporter inhibitors are first seen in Star Trek in [Star Trek IX: Insurrection], released a while after this episode.)

DAMAGE REPORT

In pursuit of the escaping Ferengi, the gravitational effects of the wormhole refract Voyager's tractor beam, making it impossible for Voyager to get a lock. See details above.

According to Starfleet computer records, approximately seven years ago, in the Alpha Quadrant, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D hosted negotiations for ownership of the Barzan wormhole. Those events are depicted in [TNG: The Price]. That story explains how Kol and Arridor ended up in the Delta Quadrant.
