1. WHAT IS THE GUIDE?

The Guide is a supplement to the standard-issue STARFLEET BASIC SURVIVAL MANUAL (publication to make it available to non-Starfleet personnel is awaited; it is not known if the Manual will in fact ever be so published) that is received by all Starfleet personnel during basic training at Starfleet Academy, and made freely available to all active Starfleet personnel by the Starfleet Bureau of Information.

The specialised Guide addresses unique, unusual or extremely rare situations that have been encountered by Starfleet personnel, and other explorers of deep space, in recent centuries.

The Guide has been prepared by David Mack (co-writer with John J. Ordover on several [Star Trek: Deep Space 9] episodes), with illustrations by Timothy M.M. Earls (who worked for three years in the [Star Trek: Voyager] art department), and published by Pocket Books as a canon source under licence from Paramount Pictures. Non-Starfleet personnel may purchase a copy of the Guide, ISBN 0-7434-1842-5. It is published in book format to take into account lifeforms without PADDs. The Guide, Document number 101321610518-0313, is reprinted with the permission of the Starfleet Information and Instruction Agency, and this Edition has been modified for security purposes. It is for distribution only within the United Federation of Planets.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION FOR PURCHASE OF THE GUIDE.
I am very pleased to see the Guide's publication, partly because I keep failing the Starfleet survival course (I am actually writing this note while dead), and partly because I once had the idea of composing something similar though not as extensive (for [Voyager] only, for a start). I kept getting the idea, though little substance to it, as I keep seeing "The S.A.S. Survival Guide" on my bookshelf. But I could only think of the feeble wordplayish title "The U.S.S. Survival Guide" and....well, I had more interesting things I wanted to do [Voyager]-wise. I recommend the Guide (publication details above). It is also one of those books that, the more you know and love about Star Trek, the more fun it is to read as you glean more of the references and add to existing knowledge. Only a small portion of the Guide is reproduced here - this and the rest are both definitely worth reading/buying.

2. VIEWING REQUIREMENTS/RECOMMENDATIONS

Required:This site section, as with the rest of the site, is optimised for Windows, MS Internet Explorer 6, 800x600 resolution, and is best viewed with animated images enabled.

3. HOW MUCH OF THE GUIDE IS HERE?

Only a portion of the Guide is reproduced on this site. I retain the numbering system for the sections and subsections as used by the original Guide. I recommend purchase of the Guide - details are above in 1. What Is The Guide?.

Sections reproduced here relate to USS Voyager, both specific incidents and pertinent contextual or background information e.g. the Guide subsections on non-standard uses of a tricorder complement SHIP USS VOYAGER: Equipment: Tricorder Index. Even standing alone, the diagrams are also very informative.

As the text is from the Guide, there are references to other parts of the Guide: all such references are reproduced (as the Guide is reproduced verbatim) whether the section referred to is reproduced on this site or not; however, only cited sections reproduced on this site show a link (which can thus be clicked on).

4. TEXT, ILLUSTRATIONS, ANIMATIONS

The text is from the Guide. Non-credited diagrams are from the Guide; they can be easily identified as they are black and white line drawings labelled "Fig.[number.number]". The Figure numbers do NOT relate to the subsection numbers. Some Figures appear in more than one subsection, a feature not practical in the book format of the Guide.

Any tv screenshots or scans from other canon sources were done by me. The LCARS interface was designed and executed by me based on interfaces shown in the canon source CC. Animations were done by me; for visual variety, some run only a certain number of times while some still/animated images load randomly.

The animation of the Starfleet Command logo was done by me on a scan I did from The Star Trek Sticker Book canon source, in order to replace the poor quality one obtained from the (now closed) staga site (author of the original animation unknown; the animation concept is not Janet's, therefore) - it was poor quality only because it was too small which meant the writing could not be read.

5. GUIDE NOTES & JANET'S NOTES

Clicking on "SHOW NOTE" will reveal information. Clicking on "HIDE NOTE" (which appears along with the revealed note) will hide the note again.

I present notes, denoted as "NOTE", to accompany a subsection as regards [Voyager]-relevant information or pertinent background Star Trek data. Some are still under construction. Notes that appear in the Guide as notes separate from the main text are denoted as "GUIDE NOTE"; thus to access one click "SHOW GUIDE NOTE" and to hide it click "HIDE GUIDE NOTE".

Links to relevant sections elsewhere on site are given. The most common links also appear on the LCARS display on the Index page e.g. Communications Index.

6. GUIDE EXCLUSIONS

The Guide does ot contain information on basic survival techniques such as those found in the standard-issue STARFLEET BASIC SURVIVAL MANUAL. The Guide is intended as a specialised supplement to a basic survival manual and should not be regarded as a stand-alone reference work. No survival manual ever written can possibly address every situation, crisis, or circumstance that might befall a traveller on an alien world or in deep space. Ultimately it is the courage, perseverance and ingenuity of individuals that determines who will be able to adapt and survive.

7. GUIDE VERSION DATE

The version date of the Guide must be, at the earliest, after USS Voyager's contact with the Alpha Quadrant made via the Doctor's visit to the Alpha Quadrant in 2374 (depicted in [#82 Message in a Bottle]) at which time he briefed Starfleet. The Guide refers, for instance, to the use of holographic organs as temporary substitutes, a pioneering technique employed by USS Voyager's Doctor in 2372 on the Vidiian scientist Dr Danara Pel. Situations encountered by USS Voyager's crew which are dealt with by the Guide could have been incorporated at any time after 2374, but given the significance of certain information, such as encounters with the Borg, it is likely that the Guide was updated promptly. This is especially likely given that regular contact between USS Voyager and Starfleet was established via monthly datastreams routed via the MIDAS Array from mid-to-late 2376 (as depicted in [#144 Lifeline]).

One or two subsections refer to events (in, say, Season 4 to 7 of [DS9]) which USS Voyager's crew cannot have known about while they were happening (except for some updates via datastreams about, say, the Dominion War, from late 2376 onwards), and therefore the textus receptus (received text) of the Guide cannot be the version on USS Voyager's computer database. However, the Guide states that it has been modified "for security purposes" and it is a publication made available to non-Starfleet personnel. Thus it is to be expected that it would differ from any version used by USS Voyager's crew (except of course the subsection on using holographic lungs described above).

The latest version date is probably 2378 because the Guide was published for non-Starfleet personnel shortly after the release of the film [Star Trek: Nemesis] which, according to ST:M, takes place in 2378. If the version date is actually much later than 2378, probably the Guide would refer to at least one of the 'extreme scenario' events in that film e.g. the starship ramming maneuver.
