U.S.S. Voyager : Hangar Deck (Deck 10) and Shuttlecraft
Page 1
Please navigate carefully around this page to avoid bumping into and damaging the shuttlecraft. A lot have been damaged or destroyed already.
The show features the following shuttlecraft types:
| Type 2 | The Type 2 personnel shuttlecraft is designed for short distances and has very limited warp capacity. It is notorious for its cramped conditions giving rise to the complaint among Starfleet crews of "Type 2 claustrophobia" [#96 Drone]. In [#109 and #110 Dark Frontier], the Voyager crew uses a class-2 shuttle with false bio-readings to trick the Borg into dropping their ship's shields to bring it in. The Voyager crew sacrifice the shuttlecraft so that the away team can transport on board the Borg ship and steal a transwarp coil. | ||||||||||||
| Type 6 | The Type 6 personnel shuttlecraft is a short-range shuttlecraft, but designed for longer distances than the Type 2 or the Type 5 (the Galileo 5 in [Star Trek: The Final Frontier])*. The Type 6 has been used by Starfleet for many years but it has limited defensive and offensive capabilities, and its range means that it is usually kept on larger starships and starbases.
The Type 6 has two pilot seats. Six standard-sized humanoids can be accommodated in the rear section as passengers. The rear compartment is seen several episodes including [#38 Innocence], [#61 Rise] and [#80 Mortal Coil]. The rear section also has a large door which is lowered and used as a ramp onto planetary surfaces etc. The shuttlecraft's emergency anti-grav thrusters are mentioned in [Coda]; the specific shuttlecraft in that episode was the Sacajawea. * Behind-the-scenes: The Type 6 was an extensive modification of the Type 5 (Galileo 5) constructed for the film [Star Trek V: The Final Frontier].
| Type 8 | Similar in design to Type 6 but slightly larger. It requires a piloting crew of two (although it seems possible for one person to pilot it in emergency). It is equipped with a personnel transporter to allow short-range transportation from, say, the orbit of a planet. It has slightly enlarged twin warp nacelles compared to the Type 6 which is what gives it an extended travelling range over the Type 6.
Its length and weight are otherwise similar to the Type 6, namely 6 metres and about 3.38 metric tonnes. Unlike the Type 6, the Type 8 (on [Star Trek: Voyager] anyway) seems permanently equipped with phasers, with Type IV phaser emitters installed.

| Type 9 | The Intrepid-class ship also carries several Type 9 shuttlecraft. These are more streamlined, having a pointed front and larger warp nacelles. The Type 9 personnel shuttlecraft is commonly known as a Class 2 shuttlecraft: the term Class 2 is a designation for shuttlecraft with small crew cabins and limited amenities, and include the Type 6, 8, and 9 models. Paris says that "they (Starfleet Academy) used to shoe-horn half a dozen cadets into one of these things (a Type-9) for weeks at a time; you did not want to be around when they opened up that air-lock." [#96 Drone].
The Type 9 is a more streamlined vessel than earlier Types but has less internal volume. It can be crewed by a single person if necessary but is furbished for two pilots and four passengers. It has the greatest range of the standard Starfleet shuttlecraft carried by Voyager, with a maximum speed of warp 4. Length: 8.5 metres. Height: 2.95 metres. It is specifically designed for deep space scouting missions, even though they are actually rather smaller than the Type 6. The greatest advantage that a Type 9 shuttlecraft has as far as a vessel like USS Voyager is concerned is its relatively compact dimensions. This enables a sizeable number to be stored within the shuttlebay area. The Type 9s on Voyager are permanently equipped with phaser emitters of the Type IV variety.
Because of its speed and manoevreability the Type 9 shuttle is ideal for long-range scouting missions. The Type 9 shuttle is lightly armed and carries phasers as standard; it has shields. It has a transporter which can beam four individuals at one time. The shuttle is entered from a hatch at the rear. There are two seats at the main controls.

| Type 12 | The shuttlecraft used by Tom Paris in his ill-fated flight that broke the warp 10 barrier [#31 Threshold] was called a Type-12 called Cochrane, named after Zefram Cochrane who invented warp drive in 2063. The Type-12 shuttlecraft, an upgrade of the Type-9 (source ST:M), are relatively small, short to medium range vessels carried by a number of starships (source TOSTFF, implying that Voyager has more than one of them, an erroneus implication in my view). Voyager's complement of shuttlecraft at the start of the mission into the Badlands in 2371 was four (source SS), and the Cochrane's markings include "shuttle 4" with its name underneath. For the historic transwarp flight depicted in [#31 Threshold] the Cochrane was specially upgraded by being fitted with experimental transwarp engines powered by a new kind of dilithium found in the Delta Quadrant. The shuttlecraft successfully broke the transwarp barrier but the horrendous side effect on the pilot ruled it out transwarp speed for future use.
The Cochrane was used on a mission to try and recover Voyager's ejected warp-core but the mission failed and it was destroyed by Caatati weapons fire [#71 Day of Honor]. For more information beam to TYPE-12 SHUTTLECRAFT: INDEX:

| All higher class shuttlecraft are equipped with shields and weaponry designed to provide the vessel with better protection against threat forces. However, no shuttlecraft can withstand prolonged combat with a more powerful vessel. | |||||||||||||
| Shuttlecraft tend to be named after famous pioneers e.g. Cochrane [Threshold], Drake [Non Sequitur], Sacajawea [Coda]. The trend does not extend to runabouts, which are named after places, e.g. the prototype called Yellowstone [Non Sequitur]. (The Danube-class runabouts, assigned for instance to Deep Space 9, were named after rivers e.g. Rio Grande, Rubicon.) | |||||||||||||

Voyager's hangar deck consists of various shuttlebays (no doubt for production reasons, it is usually or always Shuttlebay 05 which appears on tv!), each storing particular shuttlecraft e.g. the Type 9 personnel shuttlecraft are stored in custom-built shuttlebays located at the rear of Decks 9 and 10. That is an area which is also used to repair and even manufacture new shuttlecraft. At the start of [#125 Alice] Chakotay mentions that Voyager has a full complement of shuttles. Neelix's shuttle Baxial is also stored in a shuttlebay, until late 2377, depicted in [#169 Homestead], when Neelix takes Baxial upon leaving Voyager to settle permanently in a Talaxian colony.
The energy required to replicate new shuttlecraft is prohibitive, especially with Voyager out of reach of Federation facilities. However the Delta Flyer, which was blown to pieces in an engagement with the Borg, depicted in [#147 Unimatrix Zero, Part One], was in operation soon afterwards, in [#148 Imperfection].* |
