Voyager's food replication system

Food service on board USS Voyager is provided by a molecular replication system that can instantly recreate any of thousands of food selections by verbal command at a moment's notice.

[#1 and #2 Caretaker]

Janet: "Tom, I'd like to take your picture. Say 'cheese'."
Tom: "But it's tomato soup I want."
Janet: "It's an old Earth expression. Just look at the camera and smile."
Above: Tom Paris arrives in the messhall at the wall on which are mounted two food replicators (one is already in use) between which there is a large LCARS display labelled "food service". This is at a time before Voyager gets hurtled into the Delta Quadrant, and before Neelix converts this wall into a food service counter between the messhall and the adjoining galley in [#5 Phage].

Left: In [#1 and #2 Caretaker] the computer informs Paris that there are fourteen varieties of tomato soup: with rice, with vegetables, Bolian-style, with pasta... He interrupts and orders plain, and is asked to specify hot or chilled.

Using their transporter-based technology, replicators can produce, with almost total fidelity, nearly 4,500 types of foods, which are stored in computer memory. Of these templates, a proportion are tailored for certain known cultures of the Alpha Quadrant from class-M worlds with specialised nutrient, temperature, pressure or radiation intake needs e.g. Voyager's database includes tomato soup Bolian-style. The number of total template items has probably increased substantially thanks to Neelix's knowledge of, and experimentation with, Delta Quadrant cuisine. As programmable items include food at various stages of preparation (raw, partly-prepared etc.) Neelix finds the replicator very useful considering that he caters for a large number of people throughout the day. For example, Neelix in [#16 Learning Curve] tells Tuvok: "Ensign Ashmore asked for something called macaroni and cheese." It would be possible, once Neelix learned how to prepare the dish, to program it into the replicator to speed up preparation time on future occasions. The matter stream is then routed through a network of waveguide conduits to any one of the replicator terminals located throughout Voyager, where the food is delivered by being materialised.

As a safety precaution, starship replicators are programmed not to produce fatal poisons [#34 Death Wish].

I do not know the number of replicator terminals on Voyager; on the far larger Galaxy-class starship there are hundreds. Known locations of food replicator terminals include the messhall, senior officers' quarters, briefing room, captain's ready room, the smaller messhalls used by junior officers (more on junior private quarters). Food replicators are located in most living quarters as well as in various lounges and common dining areas. The molecular pattern matrix controls the rematerialisation process at the replication terminal, so that the finished product is a virtually identical copy of the original dish.

Here Janeway has managed to burn the dinner.
This seems to be common for her, because in [Shattered] Chakotay jokes, "Let me guess: you burned the roast again." and in [Workforce] she produces a meal for Jaffen and tells him it should be alright once the burnt bits are cut off.

Janeway tries to repair her replicator. She tells Chakotay: "Once, a long time ago, I called this replicator a 'glorified toaster.' It never forgave me."
