These photos show a proof-of-concept design maquette constructed by Rick Sternbach of what was believed to be a final direction for the design of USS Voyager.
As the level of finishing shows, it was never intended to be photographed in detail, but was intended to be a final stage in the approval of the ship's ultimate design. If approved, it would have then normally gone on to be a guide for those model-builders bidding for the contract to construct the model to be used in actual filming.
This prototype served to inspire the producers to send Richard James' team, including Rick Sternbach, back to their drawing boards with a new direction, and one that would eventually result in the final approved configuration of USS Voyager as now know her.
