A hypospray is a medical implement which by the 23rd century, throughout the Federation, replaced the needle syringe as a means of injecting medication to a humanoiod patient subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Its design has developed (2260 example) - that used aboard Voyager is pictured below.

[Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy]
The hypospray is a small handheld device, a bit larger than the old-fashioned needle syringe, which delivers medication on the principle of an extremely fine, high-pressure aero-suspension stream that forces a liquid-based treatment under the skin of the patient through an adjustable nozzle located at the tip of the device. This method means that medicines can be administered into the bloodstream of an individual quickly, efficiently and effectively. click for audio clip from the episodeinjecting hypospray

One essential part of the hypospray is the narrow cylindrical vial in which the drug is suspended prior to use. The entire transparent container is inserted into the top of the hypospray, and when the injection button on the hypospray is pressed a carefully measured dose of treatment is delivered.

The vials are easily interchangeable, which is a particularly useful feature for the Emergency Medical Hologram aboard Voyager, as he often works alone. The normal crew complement of an Intrepid-class starship such as Voyager includes a permanent nurse. This post has not been replaced although Kes acted as trainee nurse and assistant until she left Voyager in 2374, and Lt. Tom Paris, who had some medical knowledge, was assigned in 2371 to assist the Doctor.
