In the unrealised late 24th century/early 25th century timeline depicted in [#171 and #172 Endgame] (specifically in Part One of that story), Barclay has gained promotion to Commander and is a lecturer at Starfleet Academy, working in the former Pathfinder lab.

Here Commander Barclay calls up a holo-image of a Borg drone.

Barclay has become a self-confident person with good people skills. In [Pathfinder] Voyager's crew make Barclay an honorary member of the crew. As their friend, in the 2404 depicted in [#171 and #172 Endgame], he takes it upon himself to propose the toast at the annual reunion.

Reginald Barclay: "Ten years ago tonight, this crew returned home from the longest away mission in Starfleet history. Twenty-three years together made you a family, one I'm proud to have been adopted by. So let's raise our glasses - to the journey!"

Admiral Kathryn Janeway finds an ally in Barclay, whose dedication to the Voyager crew extends to helping her plans to travel into the past and bring ship and crew home early. He helps her with regard to a specially modified shuttlecraft which is kept for her in Oakland shipyard. Her plan is almost scuppered, however, by Barclay's inability to dissemble and keep her whereabouts secret. When the Doctor reveals his fears for Admiral Janeway's safety and suspicion that she is up to something, Barclay loses his self-confidence and begins stammering. Stammering is something the Doctor has not seen him do for years, and it simply confirms to the Doctor that the Admiral is embarking on something dangerous. He informs Captain Harry Kim who sets off in his starship, USS Rhode Island, and apprehends the Admiral. Fortunately the Admiral enlists his help and successfully travels back to 2377 where she joins USS Voyager. She overcomes the reservations of her younger self and, working together, Admiral Janeway and Captain Janeway bring ship and crew back home to Earth. At the same time they achieve a crippling blow to the Borg by destroying one of the Borg's six transwarp hubs. As it had an aperture into the Alpha Quadrant, Janeway and her crew eliminate a possible immediate Borg threat.

In the new timeline, in 2377, Barclay, Admiral Owen Paris and everyone at Pathfinder, are the first to contact the returned ship - using short-range communications! Barclay sees the successful fruition of his hard work at Project Pathfinder.

The future as seen in Part One of [#171 and #172 Endgame] therefore disappears, but it is likely that certain aspects of it will occur, such as Barclay's promotion within Starfleet and his continuing friendship with the Doctor and other members of Voyager's crew.
