BEHIND-THE-SCENES: THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN PROTON

Compare the following pictures of female characters with those below from 1930s films.

There is always a blonde heroine whose role is not to think but simply look beautiful and vulnerable, and need rescuing. As such she is required, whether free or tied up, to scream often, as monsters, villains or other dangers threaten.

Queen Arachnia. As the holocharacter is meant to be a villainess, her hair is brunette, which coincidentally suits Janeway's own hair colouring.

Constance Goodheart screams. She is tied to the pillar. Her hair is styled in the same way as Dale Arden's, with ringlets and a centre parting.

To help achieve the authentic 1930s look, the designers in the make-up department of 'Star Trek Voyager' used heavy liners around the eyes, and a heavy make-up base for the actors and actresses.

The designers also researched the way black & white make-up was used in combination with the harsh lighting of the period to create very stark shadows to convey drama and mood.

The highlights on Kate Mulgrew's face were over-applied to enhance her features and ensure they would show in black & white.
