BEHIND-THE-SCENES
Captain Proton's universe took elements directly from 1930s/1950s black & white sci-fiction comics and their tv or film dramatisations.
Pages 1-4 concentrate on three sources mentioned by Alan Sims and others in the ST:M article (see Sources & Credits): namely Commando Cody, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and Flash Gordon.
Pages 5-8 describe the design and creation of various Captain Proton Holoprogram props. Includes a subsection
;-)My Family Photo Album by Satan's Robot;-)
which incorporates notes on other sources.
Pages 9-15 give visual comparisons between the classic black & white science fiction and how 'Star Trek Voyager' (or, how Tom Paris!) imitated them to give authenticity to the Captain Proton Holoprogram. Subjects covered: sets, costumes, hair and make-up.
Page 16 has [Bride of Chaotica!] soundfiles with a 1930s one to compare.
Page 17: Kate Mulgrew, Rick Berman executive producer, and Richard James production designer speak; includes original sets pictures in colour.

The Captain Proton holoprogram is mentioned but not seen in the following:
  • [Season 5: #97 Extreme Risk]: During a session designing the Delta Flyer, Tuvok says to Paris: "And if we do, I suppose these useless design elements from your Captain Proton scenario will compensate for the problem?" Paris: "Hey, every one of these knobs and levers is fully functional." Tuvok: "And completely superfluous."
  • [Season 6: #125 Alice]: Paris is so engrossed in restoring Alice that he forgets he and Kim are due to play Captain Proton 'The Web of Pain' on the holodeck.
  • [Season 7: #149 Drive]: Tuvok: "According to the letter, your friend Mr Soroyan was killed by the Maquis a number of years ago." Kim goes for sarcasm: "You got me, Tuvok. I confess. I was so distraught after hearing Maxwell's name that I fired my Captain Proton comatiser at every Maquis I could find."
  • [Season 7: #154 Nightingale]: Kim to Paris: "I don't know how else to say this, so I'll just say it: you've always been Captain Proton, I've always been Buster Kincaid. It's my turn this time."
  • [Season 7: #166 Author Author]: Paris learns the Doctor is having a holonovel published: "You know, I've never thought about getting my work published. Maybe I could talk to your people about Captain Proton." Doctor: "Broht & Forrester deals in sophisticated literature." Paris: "What are you saying, that I'm low-brow?"
  • [Season 7: #171 and #172 Endgame]: Kim tries to persuade Paris to help him convince Janeway to return to the Borg-infested nebula: "Captain Proton would never walk away from a mission like this." Paris: "Captain Proton doesn't have a wife, and a baby on the way."
