PATHFINDER LAB - layout diagram and description

Project Pathfinder lab layout. Source TOSTFF

The lower level access doors open out onto the smooth gray floor of the laboratory's lower section. The upper section directly above is supported by a series of pylons and struts.

The illumination can be increased or decreased in different parts of the laboratory, reducing glare on the large array of equipment and workstations positioned next to the walls or built into the bulkheads.

One of the most imposing pieces of equipment is a freestanding generating system close to the entrance. The freestanding generating system consists of two distinctive glowing tubular bars which are supported by larger dome-shaped mountings. It is manually activated before initiating the MIDAS Array, and it can function automatically under computer control or under supervision. An open staircase to the left of the main entrance leads up to the metallic lattice floor of the upper section. Surrounded by a series of safety rails preventing personnel from failing to the floor approximately three meters below, the upper deck houses a large circular control station that can be attended by a number of personnel at the same time, labelled upper level work station on the diagram. This high point is also used for informal presentations to senior command staff, such as Admiral Paris, regarding the development of Project Pathfinder and its attempts to communicate with USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant.

Directly opposite the safety rail built into the upper bulkhead wall is a further exit from the laboratory, the upper level access doors, which lead to other parts of the facility. This exit is normally used by the senior command members of the project.

The upper deck looks down onto the rest of the laboratory, but gives an excellent view of the large main viewscreen situated high on the opposing wall of the main room. This screen is rectangular in shape. Located directly below the screen on the ground floor of the laboratory is a small console, labelled freestanding work console, that is approximately two meters away from the blue panelled wall. This station contains many of the main controls for the entire facility - including the initiation sequence for the MIDAS Array that is instigated through a vocal command. Experiments within the laboratory can be carried out with a large number of personnel or a single person interfacing with the main computer - evidence of the high level of sophistication incorporated into this research facility.

Located to the left of the main viewscreen is a large work bench with a number of seats attached to it, designed for a small team to work in unison. Directly to the left of this bench, close to a second exit, is a further console that is used to activate the control matrix for the MIDAS Array. This is mirrored on the right of the screen by a second console located close to the hologrid entrance. It is possible to view the gravimetric levels being generated by the activated MIDAS Array on this console's display while working on the two freestanding units situated to the left of the hologrid entrance.

One console is used to direct the Array's tachyon beam toward previously detected spatial phenomena, such as the Class-B itinerant pulsar used by Lt. Barclay, and open up a micro-wormhole, thereby allowing a message to be sent to the Delta Quadrant. The other console is used to enhance the subsequently received signal from Voyager and it was this which allowed the first exchange between Lt. Barclay, Admiral Paris and Captain Janeway in 2376 depicted in [#130 Pathfinder]. During that exchange Voyager's logs were transmitted to Starfleet and Starfleet sent details of new hypersubspace technology by which they hoped to improve communications between home and Voyager. Thereafter improvements in communications between Project Pathfinder and Voyager developed to the transmission of monthly datastreams, using a cyclic pulsar to amplify MIDAS' transmissions, and eventually to actual live, regular contact [Author, Author].

Project Pathfinder's hologrid is adjacent to the lab and access to holodeck is via a door on the lower level. See Pathfinder's Holodeck.
