Ensign Jetal [Latent Image]

Ensign Jetal appears in [#105 Latent Image]. The crew celebrated her birthday with a surprise party complete with cake. Soon afterwards she was fatally injured by a member of an unidentified alien species who simultaneously attacked her and the Doctor and Kim while on a shuttlecraft mission. The Doctor had time to save either her or Kim and chose Kim. The dilemma caused his program to malfunction to such an extent that Janeway deleted his memory files for that period. Later he discovered evidence that these files had been deleted and was allowed to relive the complete memory.

Jetal's first name, Ahni, is given by Janeway in her funeral speech. The birthday cake icing reads "Happy Birthday, Ensign Jetal".

Chakotay: "I want you to go along on a few of the shuttle surveys. If I can talk you into it."
Doctor: "Another away mission? Certainly. I'm flattered."
Kim: "I guess the birthday girl and I get the pleasure of your company, Doc."
Chakotay: "You launch at 1900 hours, shuttlebay 1." Jetal: "Hello, Doctor."
Doctor: "Ensign Jetal, I haven't seen you in months."
Jetal: "The price I pay for staying in good health."
Doctor: "So, keeping busy down on deck 11?"
Jetal: "Too busy. Er, we're modifying one of the shuttles, making it more maneuverable and more 'cool'."
Doctor: "I see you've been working with Mr Paris. My condolences."

Jetal and Kim are critically injured

Jetal, critically wounded. Her blood is on the Doctor's hands. Later the Doctor feels this is true because, faced with a dilemma as to whom to treat, he chose Kim and let Jetal die.

In Voyager's Sickbay the Doctor faces a terrible dilemma, and ends up saving Kim's life while Jetal dies

Often senior officers attend a funeral in dress uniform, but not in Jetal's case. Janeway's funeral speech: "We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honoured dead, Ensign Ahni Jetal. Her intelligence and her charm have made our long journey home seem not quite so long. As she continues on a journey of her own, we will keep her in our hearts and in our memories."

Jetal is buried into space - her coffin is, as usual in Starfleet, a photon torpedo casing which is fired into space
