TRABE

The Trabe conquered the Kazon who long ago were among the most culturally and technologically advanced people in the Delta Quadrant. The Trabe, operating through the Trabe police, kept the Kazon isolated and encouraged the various Kazon sects to fight among themselves in order to make them easier to control, although many members of the Trabe race were apparently unaware that this oppression was taking place, [#30 Alliances]. Neelix explains to Janeway thus how the virtual slavery of a race went apparently unnoticed or unremarked: "You have to understand the Trabe were rich and powerful. They manipulated information about the conditions on their planet, and no one wanted to risk offending them and losing opportunities for trade." In 2346 Jal Sankur united the Kazon people who rose up and overthrew the Trabe. The Kazon sects stole many of the Trabe's spacecraft and also much concomitant Trabe technology. The theft enabled the Kazon to attain the status of a spacefaring society although they lack transporter, replicator and other technologies common to spacefaring races.

Thereafter the Trabe were persecuted by the vengeful Kazon who hounded them from place to place and preventing their settling a new homeworld. The Trabe were forced to be itinerant in a fleet of spaceships. It was their hatred for the Trabe "uniforms" which turned the Kazon easily into enemies of USS Voyager, for Voyager's crew wore uniforms as members of Starfleet and represented an authority in the form of the United Federation of Planets.

In 2372, many of the Trabe were imprisoned by the Kazon-Pommar. Living in primitive conditions and subject no doubt to the brutality of the guards, the leaders among the prisoners died, all except Mabus who took command. When USS Voyager decided to seek an alliance with a Kazon sect, Neelix was sent to Sobras, a Kazon-Pommar settlement, to contact a "friend" of his, Jal Tersa. It was hoped Jal Tersa would be able to influence his First Maje, Minnis, into opening talks with Voyager. But Neelix was arrested for no apparent reason (Mabus expressed the belief that the Kazon-Pommar were arresting any non-Kazon) and thrown into prison with the Trabe. Mabus befriended him and took him with them when they were rescued by other Trabe.

Mabus persuaded Janeway, and those of her senior staff who also attended a dinner in his honour, that the Trabe had learned their lesson. Mabus told them that his people merely sought a new homeworld and peace for the Quadrant. On the strength of this Janeway formed an alliance with the Trabe and invited all the Kazon sects to a peace conference. This was hosted by the Kazon-Pommar on Sobras; First Maje Minnis rewarded Jal Tersa for gaining him this prestige. In all, five Kazon sects were represented at the peace conference by their First Majes. But it was nothing more than Mabus' ploy to assassinate the Kazon leaders. Voyager's crew foiled the plot, Janeway angrily ended the alliance with the Trabe, and the balance of power returned to what it had been.

As explained above, as expressed by Neelix: "Everything the Kazon have they stole from the Trabe." and this includes many spaceships and accompanying technology. The following are examples of the starships stolen by the Kazon, and marked by them with the mark of the Kazon Collective ("the mark of the Kazon Collective" is noted in Encyclopaedia).
