It is a densely-packed region of drifting rocks, dust and debris that may once have been one or more planetary bodies before they were broken apart by gravitational forces. The density of the asteroid belt is so great that even a vessel of moderate size such as USS Voyager cannot navigate the zone's interior without the fear of serious impact damage. In addition, the asteroids within the belt emit a strong interference field powerful enough to fog standard Starfleet sensors. This interference may be the result of radioactive materials or minerals like kelbonite in the rocks themselves. With suitable modifications to the shields, however, the Delta Flyer can enter the belt, and when contact is lost with that auxiliary craft a Type 9 shuttlecraft is modified (but ultimately not used) with the aim of mounting a search and rescue mission for the missing Delta Flyer crew.

The Talaxian colony has a population of about 500 people, all Talaxians of all ages and sexes. They had been restricted to a segregated area of land too small to grow enough food, because the inhabitants of Phanos, where they had been accepted, considered them to be outsiders. After one colonist (Dexa's husband) tried to farm outside the restricted area and was killed in a fight with the Phanos security forces over the matter, the colonists moved on, including Dexa and her son Brax. The asteroid colony was established in 2372. |

Construction of the asteroid colony, located in the core of the asteroid itself, began with the decommissioning of five of the six ships used to convey the Talaxians to the site. The asteroid is huge, and its shape is rough and irregular. It has no atmosphere, and its exterior surface contains hundreds of impact craters and ice fields. It has its own gravity, possibly enhanced by the Talaxian colonists to an M-Class equivalent. The colony's Council Regent, Oxilon, supervised the stripping down of the five ships so that the components can be used to create a new home. Torpedo launchers were converted to excavate rock and blast away stone to create a network of tunnels. Developed over almost the next five years, conduits hewn from the asteroid rock came to form a vast network which links the homes with the central cavern and with each other. They connect to the central core by a series of tunnels and lifts. Utilising the asteroid's hot molten core, the colonists have conduits that tap directly into it in order to generate a nearly limitless supply of geothermal energy. The heat from this process assists in the production of water and breathable gases drawn from the surface ice.
