TALAXIANS : Page 2

THE TALAXIAN-HAAKONIAN WAR

The Talaxians fought a war with the Haakonians, a humanoid spacefaring civilisation native to the Delta Quadrant, for most of a decade until 2356. The picture of Dr Jetrel, a Haakonian, can be seen above. The Battle of Pyrithian Gorge was one of the conflict which occurred during the war. In 2356 the Haakonian Order deployed the metreon cascade against the civilian moon Rinax. The metreon cascade was a weapon of mass destruction which vapourised more than 300,000 Talaxians and caused thousands of others to die of metremia poisoning. Neelix's family members were among the casualties. Neelix survived because he was on Talax at the time, fleeing from military duty in a war he felt was unjust. The day after the deployment of the metreon cascade Talax surrendered unconditionally to the Haakonian Order. [Jetrel]

Palaxia, a young Talaxian girl, was a resident of Rinax when the metreon cascade was deployed. She survived but her flesh was horribly burnt in the many fires that the weapon caused. A team of rescuers, including Neelix, went to Rinax after the metreon cascade to evacuate survivors. Palaxia was returned to Talax where she died slowly. [Jetrel]

The metreon cascade also generated an overcast of contaminants and fall-out which became known as the metreon cloud. The metreon cloud rendered the Talaxian moon Rinax uninhabitable after the metreon cascade attack of 2356, and contained the vapourised remains of the victims of Rinax. [Jetrel]

Conditions on Talax under Haakonian rule were unpleasant, and the Talaxian woman Dexa told her young son Brax: "They don't treat Talaxians very well. That's why we left." [Homestead]. The metreon cascade was a weapon of mass destruction developed by Haakonian scientist Dr Ma'Bor Jetrel. The Haakonians considered the metreon cascade weapon a tremendous success but Jetrel later found himself ostracised from Haakonian society, and his wife Ka'Ree and their three children left him. Jetrel himself felt intense guilt over his role in the death of so many Talaxians at Rinax and spent many years searching for a way to make amends for the his creation, eventually developing a regenerative fusion process with which he hoped to restore some of the dead to life. Jetrel found his government uninterested in testing his concept, so in 2371 he bluffed his way onto USS Voyager in order to use the ship's technology to test his process. The experiment involved taking a sample from the metreon cloud and trying to re-integrate one of the victims of Rinax from atomic fragments in the metreon cloud. The attempt failed but in the process Jetrel impressed Neelix (who of course is Talaxian) with the sincerity of his desire to atone for the deaths he had wrought. Dr Jetrel died shortly thereafter of metremia from exposure to the metreon cascade. The war is described in [Jetrel].

Jetrel's experiment is a failure.
