ENARANS
![]() | In engineering, it is late at night. Torres is working with Jessen, a young Enaran woman, on installing and configuring the Enaran energy conservation technology. Kim is working nearby.
Torres: "You've never been there?" She is referring to Enara Prime. Jessen: "Well, the trip back to the homeland normally takes so long. I didn't want to see it that badly. I've spent my whole life in the Fima Colony and I've always considered it my home." |
![]() | Jora Mirell approaches. 'Jora' is the Enaran title of respect given to an elder female Enaran. She tells Jessen: "You'll change your mind when you see the Daeleus Cliffs at dawn."
Jessen: "Yes, I've heard they're beautiful." Jora Mirell: "You'll know what beautiful truly means when you stand on the Cliffs on a rainy morning and watch the raindrops turn to mist when they hit the molten sea." Jessen: "That sounds wonderful." |
![]() | Jessen's attention is drawn by an audio alert. "It looks like the new components are slightly out of sync with your EPS system. I can't isolate it. We'll have to check through all of them. Maybe Harry could give us a hand."
Jora Mirell, aware of the attraction between Kim and Jessen: "Well, I'm sure he would if you asked him." Jessen: "Harry, you got a minute?" Kim immediately replies: "Sure." He comes straight over. Jessen: "Could you help us check the modified power relays? There's a minor flow problem." Kim: "I'd be happy to help." Torres: "Good. Then we'll get started first thing in the morning." |

| Kim: "Well, if we're all done for tonight maybe we could all go get something to eat."
Jora Mirell: "Thank you, but I'll be headed back to bed. I'm sure you young people will manage without me. Good night." Jessen: "Good night." Jora Mirell leaves. Kim, over-brightly: "So, I guess it'll just be the three of us." Torres now suddenly notices the potential romantic chemistry between Kim and Jessen. She decides to leave them together. "Actually, getting some rest sounded like a pretty good idea. Why don't you go on without me." At once, Kim and Jessen leave, intent on each other. Torres watches them leave and comments aloud, sarcastically, "No, really, I insist." |
![]() | At the Enaran-themed evening hosted by Neelix in Voyager's messhall, after Kim arrives with Paris and is greeted by Neelix proffering a tray of doubtful-looking Enaran algae puffs, Jessen calls to Kim: "Harry."
Seeing her Kim tells Neelix: "Maybe later." and goes straight over to join her. Together they listen to Jor Brel playing beautiful music, a composition by Jora Mirell. |
![]() | We do not know how far the romance between Jessen and Kim develops during the journey from the Fima colony to Enara Prime.
During the last evening, with Voyager having arrived at Enara Prime, there is a farewell party in the messhall. Jor Brel says he is glad to have discovered the pleasant custom of making a toast and he raises his glass to his hosts. |
![]() | Suddenly Torres hurries in, pushes her way toward Jor Brel, and interrupts to accuse the Enarans of genocide (destroying the Regressives), of trying to cover it up and of murdering Jora Mirell. This "revelation" proves to be a shock for Jessen. |

Jessen: "No, you're lying. The Enarans would never do anything like what you're saying. It's unthinkable."
Torres: "It's the truth. I know that you don't want to believe it. In fact, they're counting on that. They always have." Kim to Jessen: "I know B'Elanna and I trust her. It can't hurt to listen." Jor Brel: "Nobody thinks you're lying, Lieutenant. The poor woman has been ill for a long time. Her memories may be distorted or perhaps your perception of them was coloured by elements from your culture." Torres: "No! I know that it's easier for you to believe that I'm crazy or hallucinating, but this woman shared her life, her whole identity with me. I was with her every step of the way as she convinced herself that what she did - betraying the man she loved, playing her part in the massacre - that it was all somehow for the good of Enaran society. She showed me everything: no apologies, no requests for forgiveness, just the truth. At least, she had the conscience to stand up and realise what she'd done wrong." She turns on Jor Brel. "Which is more than I can say for you." Jor Brel to Janeway: "I think it best that we now prepare for our departure, Captain. If I don't mind, I'd like to go to your sickbay to attend Jora Mirell." There is an awkward silence as he leaves and the party breaks up. |
![]() | Even if Jessen and Kim could not continue getting to know each other because Jessen is due to disembark the next day, Torres' accusation ends the convivial atmosphere and raises a barrier of suspicion. Although the Doctor's examination cannot substantiate Torres' claim that Jora Mirell was murdered, Janeway nevertheless cancels trade negotiations with the Enarans and cancels shore leave on Enara Prime. |
Later, Torres visits Jessen in engineering as the latter and the other Enarans are packing up their equipment ready to disembark.
Torres: "Can we talk for a minute?"
Jessen: "I have nothing to say to you."
Torres: "Then just listen. Like Harry said, it couldn't hurt to do that."
Jessen: "I'm leaving soon."
Torres: "I know you have no reason to believe what I've said about your people. All you have is my word against everything you've ever been taught."
Jessen: "That's right."
Torres: "So prove me wrong. Go down to Enara and find the colony where the Regressives were supposed to live. Talk to people. Ask questions. Learn the truth for yourself. Let me tell you about my experiences. Maybe that will give you some place to start. I wish I had your abilities - I could just show you."
Jessen: "You would do that? Share your experiences openly?"
Torres: "Of course. Then you'd know I was telling you the truth."
Jessen considers, then makes her decision. "I can make the connection between us." She does so and thereby receives Korenna Mirell's memories via Torres.
Harry Kim's attraction towards Jessen seems to show the unconscious ability to choose a woman of worthy character because, apart from the attraction, Jessen is a moral woman and there is little doubt that she would do as Torres suggests, that is, investigate Korenna Mirell's story and, if she found evidence, would take action to expose the truth. Jessen is the only Enaran in the group that travelled on Voyager to want to know the truth.
