 | Enaran law and punishment includes capital crimes. To exact the death penalty, at least in the times when Korenna Mirell was a young woman, public executions are carried out in which the condemned is transported to a public open space within the town. The condemned is fastened by guards to an upright pole so that he or she faces the audience. A brief speech might be made by the presiding official. The words called out by Jareth, Korenna Mirell's father and a civic leader, immediately before the execution of her lover Dathan Alaris, are given below.
It is not known if the condemned prisoner is permitted to address the audience or to speak at all but it seems unlikely. Then the execution pole is activated, which sends a burst of high energy through the condemned resulting in what looks like electrocution. The condemned dies instantly, and due to the nature of the tethering, their head and shoulders fall forward. The burned body might be left for some moments should the crowd, and the presiding official, wish to allow the audience time to express feelings of triumph. It should be noted that we do not know whether the execution of Regressives, as presided over by Jareth, was legal under Enaran law but given no other information and the fact that Jareth was able to carry out the act and not be punished for it indicates that it was, however much it might offend the universal law of morality supported by television viewers. It is likely that the Regressives were punished for the considered crime of disrupting society, as implied by Jareth's speech. Jareth calls out: "These criminals represent a growing threat to Enaran society. As responsible citizens we must fight back! With their punishment we send a signal to all Regressives - we will protect ourselves and our ideals from their destructive influence by whatever means necessary!" |
