INTRODUCTION TO THE BORG

[Dark Frontier]
The Borg are a civilisation of cybernetically enhanced lifeforms intent on attaining perfection by assimilating all intelligent lifeforms. Their aims are succintly set out in their chilling challenge which comprises one or more of these sentences:
"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own."

BORG DRONES

Individual Borg are called drones. But the individual, as a unique person, is not acknowledged or permitted and all Borg form a Collective (sometimes called "the hive" by Voyager's crew) in which all thoughts are one. When the voice of the Collective is heard by other lifeforms, it comprises a number of voices all speaking at once and without inflection.

[Dark Frontier, Part Two]

Some drones are biologically grown from various early stages, including the foetal stage, in "maturation chambers". Maturation chambers are seen in [#96 Drone] and [#136 Collective]. See Neo-natal drones.

Drones are assigned a task by the Collective, either working alone or in a group, depending on the task of the moment. Drones do not have names but are assigned number-based names or "designations".
Examples of Borg designations, from [#122 Survival Instinct]:
  • Two of Nine, primary adjunct of unimatrix zero one.
  • Three of Nine, auxiliary processor of unimatrix zero one.
  • Four of Nine, secondary adjunct of unimatrix zero one.
  • Seven of Nine, tertiary adjunct of unimatrix zero one (this was Seven's designation when a drone).

[Survival Instinct]
While drones do retain and acquire knowledge useful to the specific tasks they are assigned to perform for the Collective, individual thoughts are considered irrelevant and chaotic and are therefore purged by a device known as a vinculum [#101 Infinite Regress].

Many or even most drones start life as members of other species and are turned into Borg, usually forcibly, through the process of assimilation. There is no age too young for assimilation; Seven was assimilated at the age of six, and an assimilated baby is seen in [Collective].

Drones dismantle a drone damaged beyond repair
[Dark Frontier]
Dead drones can be re-animated up to 73 hours after death using special Borg nanoprobes to reverse cellular necrosis; the technology to achieve this was obtained on assimilating Species 149 [#80 Mortal Coil].

Drones separated from the Collective are normally retrieved and if they have the equipment available can set up a homing beacon [#122 Survival Instinct].

In [#136 Collective] the Borg Collective decided not to retrieve 5 Borg children, following the de-activation of the other drones on the cube concerned due to a pathogen.

Drones damaged to the extent that they are no longer considered capable of functioning fully are de-activated and their parts re-used. And the normal Borg protocol for drones which learn they are irrelevant is for them to de-activate themselves [#136 Collective].

[Dark Frontier]
When activated, drones serve the Collective. When not required they "regenerate" in a specifically designed alcove. Drones stand in their alcove. Indeed, according to Seven, Borg do not sit. Seven still needs to regenerate in this way, even though severed from the Hive.

BORG ASSIMILATION PROCESS

Assimilation of a member of Species 10026
(using the Borg designation for this species).

[Dark Frontier]
When the Borg assimilate someone a drone pierces the victim's skin with tubes that extend from its fingers and the tubes inject Borg nanoprobes which quickly take over the victim's bloodcells.

The assimilation process includes surgery ranging from the insertion of cortical implants, neural subprocessors etc. to the amputation of at least one arm which is replaced by a prosthetic arm comprising electronic and mechanical devices such as a medical servo-arm.

Seven assimilates a Kyrian, although this scene forms part of an inaccurate renditon of Kyrian history.

[Dark Frontier]
During the assimilation process microcircuit fibres are implanted into a humanoid victim's body. These are an element of Borg technology, designed to be implanted into humanoid tissue during the assimilation process. They are not mentioned in [Star Trek: Voyager], but their existence and use can be surmised from the fact that microcircuit fibres were implanted into Jean-Luc Picard's body when he was abducted and surgically altered by the Borg in 2366. The Borg will assimilate anyone they consider worthy of assimilation, hence for example no attempt was made to assimilate the Kazon (Borg designation "Species 329") when they encountered a Kazon colony in the Gan Sector, grid 6920 - according to Seven, the Kazon's biological and technological distinctiveness was unremarkable and unworthy of assimilation. The Borg will assimilate one individual or a few, and they regularly attack and assimilate whole races.

Drones also assimilate technology, by injecting tubules into the item(s) to be acquired and transferring knowledge of the data into the mind of the Collective. Anything with a warp signature is of interest to the Borg and liable to be attacked and assimilated. When Voyager's away team embarked on Operation Fort Knox to steal a transwarp coil from a Borg sphere, a shuttlecraft with an enhanced warp signature and false bio-readings was launched towards the sphere as a decoy, and the decoy was duly assimilated by the Borg [#109 Dark Frontier, Part One]. And in [#139 Child's Play] two Brunali sent a launch with a false warp signature toward a Borg transwarp conduit hoping that the Borg would assimilate their son who was aboard the launch and who had been deliberately bred with a destructive Borg pathogen.

After being severed from the Collective, Seven retains many Borg implants including injection tubules.

BORG SPECIES NUMBERS

Species are designated species numbers. Examples:
116 Arturis' people [#94 Hope and Fear], 218 Talaxian, 329 Kazon, 6291 Yridian, 3259 Vulcan, 5174 Hirogen, 6961 Ktarean, 5618 Human, 10026 unnamed. Sources [Mortal Coil], [The Raven], [Dark Frontier], [Equinox].
More species numbers and information in Primary Adjunct, Subjunction 03: Borg Species Numbers

Species 149 was the species from whom the Borg assimilated the technology to re-animate dead drones up to 73 hours after death [Mortal Coil].

The Borg Queen was originally a member of Species 125 [Dark Frontier].

The Borg invaded fluidic space which was the realm of a species they designated Species 8472, and were losing the war with heavy casualties when Janeway negotiated an alliance - in exchange for passage through Borg space Janeway agreed to help the Borg develop use of Borg nanoprobes into weapons against Species 8472.
